By Yee Kai / Additional reporting by Andrew Loh
Sylvia Lim, the chairman of the Workers’ Party, called for voters to “reinforce and renew the ranks of (the Workers’ Party) in parliament” by voting in more WP candidates.
This is because, she said, Singaporeans should have an “insurance” in parliament if the ruling party should become corrupt or fail.
Referring to ESM Goh Chok Tong’s statement that the PAP is its own check, Ms Lim said that it was a “more seductive lie”, a play on Mr Goh’s remarks that the opposition’s call for checks and balances on the PAP was “a seductive lie”.
He had also said, when rejecting the call for more eyes on the government from the opposition, “We are our own checks.”
Me Lim, speaking before a huge crowd in Simei, explained it was important that the ruling party is held in check by more opposition MPs in parliament.
“Nobody can give any assurance on what the future is like, and there is a simple reason why,” she said. “Parties are made up of people, when the people change, the party can change.”
She also stressed on the importance of having safeguards as an “insurance policy” for stability in the country, adding that “with diverse political representation, Singapore will not be weaker” but will be stronger.
