It used to be that sex before marriage was taboo. But now, it seems, it’s the norm to have sex before even going on a date.

Young people are more likely to have sex before going on a date as a way to size up a potential partner, according to a study

It found that 18-34-year-olds are 48 per cent more likely to get into bed with somebody before going for dinner or a drink than all other generations.

And nearly a third use sex as a litmus test for whether or not they love somebody.

Young people are so busy that they want to jump to sex first as you ‘learn a lot between the sheets’, according to the survey of 5,500 people of all ages by dating service match.com

Men were three times more likely than women to say one-night stands are useful because they can lead to a relationship and love. They were also twice as likely to say they have used them to find a long-term partner.

One possible reason for the trend is that Millennials are under so much pressure to get married.

People aged 18-34 were 177 per cent more likely than those of other generations to feel like they had to marry, the study found.

The study was carried out by dating service Match.com of 5,500 people of all ages.

It revealed that 57 per cent of millennials feel lonely, even though they are 125 percent more likely than other generations to admit they’re ‘addicted’ to finding true love.

Dr. Helen Fisher, a biological anthropologist and Match.com’s chief scientific adviser, said: ‘They’re not getting into bed just to have sex. They’re doing it to see who the person is, if they want to put their time and energy into them.

‘Millennials are busy. They are very active, very ambitious. What they’re going to do is hop into bed right away. You learn a lot between the sheets’.

Relationships expert Jean Hannah Edelstein said: ‘In a world where we are much more relaxed over separating sex and love, I can understand that Millennials are interested in testing sexual compatibility with a potential partner before pursuing a deeper emotional relationship.

‘In a more old-fashioned time, we’d postpone sex until things were really serious which meant that people ran the risk of committing to someone with whom they had no real sexual chemistry’.
