German businessman charged with promoting sex tours involving minors
SINGAPORE A 45-year-old Singapore permanent resident was hauled to court on Wednesday (Feb 15) for promoting overseas sex tours involving minors.
Michael Frank Hartung, a German, allegedly met two Singaporeans at a cafe at Raffles City Shopping Centre on Sept 26, 2015, to distribute information promoting commercial sex with minors under the age of 18 overseas.
He allegedly repeated these acts on April 15 last year this time, meeting up with two permanent residents at a pub at Mackenzie Road, near Little India.
When the police raided his Simei Green condominium on Aug 30 last year, they discovered 245 obscene films and eight uncensored films in his possession offences under the Films Act. Defence lawyer Raphael Louis told the court his client intends to claim trial to his six charges.
Quizzed by District Judge Christopher Goh on how the offences under the Films Act could be contested,
Mr Louis said that he was still in discussion with his client.
Arguing for the court to impose a lower bail amount, Mr Louis said: My client has cooperated fully with the authorities.
He surrendered his passport and his wife is a permanent resident. He owns a house here.
Bail was set at S$15,000, and the next court date was fixed for Feb 28.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Hartung worked at Deutsche Bank between 1990 and September last year. His last held position at the bank was as an internal auditor.
He joined training and consulting firm QT&T after leaving the bank, and started his own business consultancy Optiis this year.
If convicted of distributing information to promote commercial sex with a minor overseas, Hartung can be jailed up to 10 years and fined for each charge.
