Actually, you can find these people in some other tourist spots around Shanghai.

Just to share a little bit more, few years back my friend with an angmoh, were approached at Hengshan Road, brought to KTV ended up asked to pay rmb6k+ for a beer and a coffee that they took. The mm took special cocktail at rmb500 per glass. Anyway, they were lucky to be able to call 110 for the police and they simply walked off paying 0 cents.

This case may be rare liao these days, but whatever it is as bro Ronaldo said not free bicuit from the sky.

Rest assured that Shanghai in overall aspect is still pretty fine in terms of law & order here....Just go to places for bars, pubs, HCs, KTVs that were all mentioned or recommended by fellow bros...

Not sure if the shop u talking about is 1 floor above the 上岛咖啡, the neighbour shop is some BBQ restaurant. My Dutch friend was also a victim several months back, brought up there by 2 gals. At 1st, the bill for some tea, 3 - 4 orange juice / soft drinks, peanuts & melon seeds came up to about 2k RMB. He was surrounded by several men when he realised he was overcharged, but he can't speak nor read Chinese, and was very unfamiliar with Shanghai.

I managed to bargain with the "shop manager" on the phone until 300 RMB before my friend was "released" from the shop. These conmen are damn sharp & direct. Take over the phone & negotiate directly, refused to even let me have a hint of the location of the shop. But my friend recognised the direction back to the shop. At 1st, we wanted to report to the police after he was "released" and I found him. The police wanted to take us to the station to lodge an official report. Along the way, my friend felt the time taken for the process would take too much time & decided against the report.

Several of such con-shops were raided (by both black & white streams) & closed by police in recent 2 - 3 years. But, if done by police, they can easily pop-up again very quickly.
