Songkhla Mermaid 'not for prayers'

The Songkhla Municipality in Hat Yai is reminding both tourists and local people that the famed Mermaid statue is not a site intended for prayers.

The municipality announcement on Thursday said the landmark was built to be a symbol of the city, to promote Samila beach for tourists, and for no other purpose.

The statement is in response to the actions of people who have begun draping the statue in yellow scarfs and flower garlands.

Beachside vendors say they believe that worshippers bought the scarfs and garlands after their prayers had been answered.

The municipality announcement said this worship was damaging the mermaid's reputation and to the intended purpose of the statue.

The bronze statue was cast by Chirt Buabutr, a former director of Poh Chang School, in 1966 and was commissioned by the municipality at a cost of 60,000 baht.

It followed the example of Copenhagen, in Denmark, which has the famed Little Mermaid sculpture as the city's symbol. The Danish statue has been with the city since 1913.

The Songkhla Mermaid is officially named the Golden Mermaid, or Nang Nguek Thong. ----- KatoeyNewsNetwork

Wah.... soooo good now only 13 hours journey.
When I first started cheonging hatyai the journey was 18 hours (at that time got no NS Highway). The coach will leave GMC at 4pm and arrive at hatyai @ 8-9am.

Yes first choice will always take coach from Johor Bahru Larkin Bus Terminal.
Power of the exchange rate at RM75 one way by Konsortium Bas Ekpress.
Recently I think price up a bit liao.

Spider has more gals now (total I saw abt 20; most rating abt 5 to 7). Maybe 3-4 dinos. Topless dancing more showy with some props. But sound system too bloody loud couldn't tahan for long inside.

Winner still not bad, but I also saw 3-4 dinos there now. Has more syt than spider. Music and lighting inside is better too.

Going to recce further tonight. :P

Then wait for van to hatyai. 4 1/2hour?
Then travel to bus station and to dannok 7 hour?

I only take plane if i am going direct to hatyai only plus want to buy duty-free at singapore airport cause the selection at malaysia duty-free is limited.

Taking a VIP coach from Golden mile is only 40+bucks if take the cheap ones 30+ also have. 12 hours to reach dannok. finish work on friday travel to GM then sleep on coach. Chiong leow take coach sleep and reach singapore early morning go to work.

Bus will risk heavy traffic jams in both sg-my and my-th check points during peak periods. Moreover is very tiring journey.
