If you know Chinese, it's easier for you to study Vnmese. The 2 languages share almost the same grammar and quite a number of words similar in pronunciation (as well as meaning) .

Ví Dụ:

Mandarin:
clothes -- yī fu -- y phục -- we call this as Chinese-Vietnamese word
(dunno English meaning of this one)-- lì hài -- lợi hại
escape -- táo zǒu -- đào tẩu

Cantonese:
student -- hok saang -- học sinh (South Vietnam could be: học sanh, actually 96% same pronunciation of Cantonese)

i still remember the 1st time i went to HCM... the manager of the hotel i stayed in can spk mandarin and cantonese fluently....

i know the singlish vs of loi hai - powderful...(guess this is one of the few meanings)...

share with u guys one joke that i just realised not long ago...

last time when i sing vang trang khoc, there's a line "...đừng thương tiếc chi thêm đau lòng"

whenever i sing the "đau lòng", one ktv girl keep slapping my arm... i was totally confused when i ask another ktv girl what it means she say heart pain... so i was always thinking how come that girl slapped my arm... everyday confused

until recently i met a viet friend, long story cut short, we saw a picture of pig then i say, "xau long" then he laughed until almost fell of his chair... i was confused... again...

then he told the way i pronounce "long" sounds like the "long" which means pussy in vnmese...

come to think of it... no wonder the ktv gal kept slapping my arm back then... "dau long" = " painful pussy" ... haha and called me XAO!!! loudly somemore

That's hilarious bro . I've just read up to here then could imagine how you pronounced "lòng" and kena fall of the chair already . Actually, if being pronounced correctly, "lòng" is totally different from pussy, which is "lồn". Must see how you speak the word in real life .

Fun thing to do, next time you can act blur and tell a Vgirl something like: "em thật có lòng tốt" = "you really have a nice soul", but of course we know what she would hear
