so i think it is unjustifiable to have a such a huge pay-cut. we singaporeans are really selfish loh, we want high pay and pay increment for ourselves every year, but not for the MPs and ministers. BTW i m not a PAP member or even in the civil service.

Bro sun814, i echo your view. The new generation i feel lack passion n interest in a long term career. Most of the young ones i met seem to have an overemphasis on pay.

Recently, i was talking to a group of fresh engineering graduates. Most of them r quite technical individuals, but they mostly hope to find a job in an investment bank, solely for the higher pay, even though they don't seem to have a good idea of the nature of work in finance.

With the young so driven by pay n the PAP taking a pay cut because they r under the stress of not doing well in the recent election, would our brightest young talent wanna step up n try to serve the nation when it becomes relatively easier for him or her to make a minister's salary in the private sector? Take golf for example. Professional golfers r supposed to have a love for the game, but if the Barclay's Singapore Open reduces it's prize pool from US$6 million to US$1 million, i doubt Major winners like Phil Mickelson would still be coming for the tournament.

People can speculate all they want about whether a lower ministerial pay will bring out the ones who truly wanna serve the nation, but let's get real, how on earth can we ever tell if someone really wants to serve the nation above his or her self interest? Put them through a lie detector test before electing them? I would rather focus on tangible results than intentions that i have no way of ascertaining.

IMHO, what matters most to me is a system that allows the average Singaporeans to have a say in the performance indicators of the ministers. If their KPIs can be better tailored to a form of growth that is more evenly distributed to all Singaporeans, then i personally have no problems with the open corruption that some bros mentioned. In fact, i would like a system where corruption is transparent, but one that lets all Singaporeans know that if they r good enough, they can come get it.

I sincerely hope that we can get ministers of the right caliber in 10 to 20 years time. After all, the one n only resource of our country is n always will be the resourcefulness of our people
