Re: Hanoi
Hanoi’s antique cafes
====================================== VietNamNet Bridge – Sipping a hot glass of coffee while admiring rare antiques is a strange feeling that many people seek at antique-cafes in Hanoi. Some special cafes have appeared in Hanoi in recent years, such as Co Vat café (Antique) and Xe Co café (old vehicles). These “antique” cafes have become familiar destinations for many people who love antiques. The two favorites of antique fans are Xe Co café and Art café. The owners of these cafes are antique collectors. Apart from doing business, they want to make their cafes a venue for antique collectors and those who are curious about antiques.

Re: Hanoi
Sword Lake to get pretty on millions of bucks
================================================== ==== Hanoi is planning to spend US$5 million to spruce up Sword Lake and its surrounding area for the celebration of the capital’s 1,000th anniversary in October. The projects are expected to be completed by the end of June before the anniversary. One project to improve and beautify the lake’s embankment, flower gardens, plant decorations and paths will cost an estimated VND40 billion ($2.1 million). Another worth more than VND46 billion ($2.4 million) will include replacing or adding public lights around the lake as well as at attractions in the area such as the Turtle Tower, the Ngoc Son Temple and the The Huc Bridge, Hanoi People’s Committee vice chairman Nguyen Van Khoi said at a city meeting. Khoi said all plant and flower work around the lake should be done this month. He asked investors and contractors of the projects to be careful as the lake was a “sensitive” spot, for the city and the country. Contractors have to finish one task before starting another, in both projects, and make sure wastewater from their work does not flow into the lake, Khoi said. Source: VNA

Re: Hanoi
Poor planning in Hanoi causes over 1000 apartments unoccupied
================================================== ====== VietNamNet Bridge – Hundreds of construction projects are in the works in Hanoi despite the fact that over 1000 apartments slotted for resettlement have been left empty and derelict. Hundreds of rotting apartments are sitting empty in the Nam Trung Yen apartment blocks in the populated district of Cau Giay, reported Tien Phong newspaper. Local people said that these apartment blocks were built several years ago but nobody seems to have moved in. In some cases, the first floors of these apartment blocks have been left unlocked and have become dens for drug addicts and criminals. The dismal apartment blocks are surrounded by wild grass and rubbish. Another apartment block totaling 125 apartments in Phu Thuong ward, Tay Ho district is in similar situation. This work was finalized in 2006 and it is empty at present. Lack of planning seems to be at the root of the problem. Nguyen Thanh Tinh, chairman of Phu Thuong ward, said that this apartment block is not used because it doesn’t have clean water. Contractors cannot install water pipes to the site because, before breaking ground, they did not acquire proper site clearance. Not far away, a 62-apartment complex in Xuan La ward has been left in ruin for several years. It is the same for hundreds of apartments along Le Van Luong Road and in Den Lu area, Hoang Mai district. With a price tag of 20 million dong per square meter, thousands of empty units in inadequate buildings have cause Hanoi to incur losses in the hundreds of billions dong. Why is this situation being allowed to continue to happen? Officials said that there are two major reasons. Firstly, apartments are already built but supporting services and facilities like roads, clean water, telecom services, etc. are not available. Secondly, city examiners have not yet determined the prices for some apartment blocks. From now to 2020, Hanoi plans to continue to build up to 50,000 more apartments and if the above problems are not solved, many more apartments will be left neglected, causing increasingly huge losses for the city.
