Fast forward about a year to May 14th, 2006. Rafa and his red men may not have delivered the Premiership. But what Reds fans did have was another 3-3 thriller and after another penalty shootout, the FA Cup for a seventh occasion.

In between, I have flown to Japan and witnessed Liverpool almost crowned World Club Champions in Yokohama. Despite the cup final defeat, it was a truly magnificent experience watching live in person my first competitive Liverpool games and for that I would have to thank the Japan fan club supporters, the travelling Scousers and every other Red I met along the way. Liverpool have in fact twice paid a visit to Singapore, but on both occasions, the matches were of a pre or end of season exhibition nature.

So, as the 2006-07 season began, it must have seemed as though the good times were truly on their way back. Was it too much then to expect that come May 2007, the elusive Premiership could finally be conquered?

Perhaps some of us Liverpool fans have been spoilt so much by the dramatics of the last two seasons that we have gotten ahead of ourselves in expecting too much too soon this time around.

Supporters who have followed the club’s fortunes a lot longer than I have will look back on the glory days from Shankly, Paisely, Fagan, Dalglish. As for me, I started as a nine-year-old in the season of 1988-89: Hillsborough (JFT 96), an FA Cup triumph against Everton and the haunting “it’s up for grabs now” conclusion to the league. Not your typical childhood by any stretch of the imagination, but, in a bizarre way, the best possible introduction to life as a Liverpool fan.

One league title, 17 seasons and nine games later, we find Liverpool back on top. Some things never change. Except this time, Liverpool find themselves head of the bottom half of the table.

Reds supporters all over the world may be enduring a frustrating time, but I believe that form is temporary, class is permanent. With so many new signings, it is inevitable that the team will take time to gel. Personally, I feel that one reason why Rafael Benitez is continuing with the heavily criticised rotation policy is simply to allow all the players, new and old, a chance to learn to play with one another. In the longer-term, I’m sure it will reap its rewards in a stronger squad overall, if not this season, then the following.

In any case, the policy has been in place for so long, isn’t it strange that few even cared to mention it the whole of last season, where apart from a dominant Chelsea side, Liverpool finished just a point behind second place, reaching and winning another cup final.

Still, a two-nil reverse against one of our most hated rivals will have left a really bitter taste not just to us Reds in Singapore but all over the world. It certainly didn’t make writing this feature any easier.

Here in Singapore, we like most Reds are a passionate lot, and I can vouch that it will not have been a pleasant Monday morning for most of us back at work, especially if there were lurking Manchester United-supporting colleagues lying in wait.

Thankfully, it will only be a week before we’re again able to catch our favourite team live in action, back at Anfield against an unbeaten Villa side.

As great as the physical distance presents a barrier to our support of Liverpool, it is no longer what it used to be in the pre-Premiership days when all we had were the weekend live commentaries on BBC Radio and the occasional live matches, such as FA Cup Semi and Finals.

These days, we, as are most in Asia, are fed a healthy diet of live Premiership and Champions League football, as well as a host of preview and review programmes on cable networks ESPN and STAR Sports. Local media coverage and the internet, including liverpoolfc.tv of course, offer more than an additional source to keep ourselves updated on the fortunes of Liverpool Football Club.

This increased access to football has also meant an increase in the number of football fans in general, though I reckon Liverpool supporters still make up more than a fair share of the total football supporting population in our little island of four million people. The networks have clearly recognised this and us Reds in Singapore are pretty fortunate that Liverpool are rarely absent from live broadcasts of Premiership or European matches.

There are also more than a fair share of venues for Liverpool supporters to choose from to display our affection for the club.

Since the start of this season, members of the local official Liverpool supporters club here have gathered at Singapore’s Hard Rock Cafe, a community and family-like atmosphere very much in the traditions of the image of Liverpool FC as a closely-knit club with links to the local community. After a number of moves, the club’s administration premises are currently located in the humble and fine surroundings of a local community club.

Elsewhere, the local pubs present another avenue to share the passion for our beloved Reds. One in particular that I’ve been to, the Penny Black, the regular gathering place of a group of supporters, East of Anfield, has recreated a feeling that I believe comes as close to the hallowed grounds of Anfield itself, with songs, chants and cheering a constant throughout the live game showings.

And for others like me, more often than not, the comforts of being an armchair supporter at home, though no less enthusiastic, or informal gatherings with close friends, including supporters of rival clubs, offer in itself a certain form of delight and enjoyment.

But regardless of where we are, on matchdays or not, our commitment and loyalty to the Reds remain strong and the club anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone” will always resonate in our hearts as we continue supporting a team in search of the elusive number 19:

In search of the holy grail
The Reds need set a blazing trail
Rafa and Stevie to lead the way
To victory on a day in May

The year yet uncertain
As all Reds show concern
Till the 19th’s at Anfield
Our support will not yield

It would be nice if the KING come back, but he quitted in the 1st place cos he find the job too stressful which I totally agree with him...

i like guus hiddink... every team he'd managed attacks and it really excites me no end... PSV's attacking football tore AC milan apart in 2005 champions league semis but were unlucky to lose out... Dalglish has been out of football scene & coaching for too long,guess he will be a very capable football director. I still take Rafa to be the coach to deliver our 19th,soon or later.

A member of the Reds' board has been quoted in the press on Friday expressing uncertainty about Rafael Benitez's future at the club

The unnamed director told the Daily Mirror: "We have paid too many inflated prices and inflated wages for players who are not doing the job.

"When it comes to any manager, the view of the board has always been to let them get on with it. We do not believe in interfering.

"But the day will come when we may not be that way inclined any more."

On Benitez's much-publicised rotation policy, the board member added: "Normally, by the time you get to October, you'd expect the manager to know his best team and stick with it but there are no signs of that happening now.

"I don't think he could tell you what his best team is."

As for Rafa, just leave him alone ... dun be another witless parrot for the press. The man's already rotated his team for 99 consecutive matches ... wonder why this din now when nobody even complained, much less mentioned, for the first 75 times or so??
What this goes to show is that Rafa knows all along what he has been doing ... but as with life, sometimes you leave the pub with a ONS, sometimes you leave the pub empty-handed.

Take note ... a certain Scumface Ferguson didn't even win anything for the initial years he took charge, so what's so difficult to give the man 5 years to get things right ... if you're a true Red??
