Re: Tieng Viet lovers club
It’s worse than we think
=============================== Motorbikers get stuck in a traffic jam on Thi Nghe Brigde, Ho Chi Minh City Traffic jams seem to be an endless saga in Ho Chi Minh City, a saga that has inflicted great losses over the years on the southern metropolis. In 2008, experts said traffic jams caused the city losses of VND14 trillion (US$718.68 million) a year. The HCMC Transport Association has complained about how much its member companies lose every year due to traffic jams. However, there are losses that are substantially bigger than those figures. Incalculable losses. Last week, Nguyen Thi Kim Phuong, 39, gave birth to her baby in a taxi as the vehicle was stuck in traffic jams for more than one hour on its way to hospital. Some newspapers called it a “miracle” when doctors managed to save the baby, who was born about 30 minutes before the taxi reached the hospital and had stopped breathing by then. But, what if the “miracle” didn’t happen? How much of a loss would that be? In fact, many babies haven’t been as lucky as Phuong’s daughter. Dr. Nguyen Huu Nhan, chief of Children Hospital No.1’s Emergency Department, said every year between ten and 30 children are stuck traffic jams as they are being taken to the hospital. Most of the children are in critical condition and need emergency treatment, but because ambulances couldn’t reach the hospital quikly, many children died, he said. There are other damages that we cannot quantify with money. Apart from the physical discomfort and highly unhealthy breathing in of toxic fumes, there are psychological impacts of being stuck in traffic jams. We can already see people getting angry and starting a fight on flimsy grounds. Because everyone is in a rush, the looks of hostility and anger being exchanged between fellow citizens and commuters are increasing. It might even be said that traffic jams make people less humane. We are scared of streets, because they have taken too many things from us. Traffic jams have us in their grip, making our lives heavier. We don’t want to go out on the street, but we can’t help it, because we have to go to school and go to work. We’ve asked: “When will the nightmare end?” Many times. And many times, plans have been announced about tackling traffic jams; yet they are still there and getting worse. We are still waiting for an answer. By Ngoc Vinh (Tuoi Tre)

Re: Tieng Viet lovers club
Just got these 2 sms from a VB and I don't know how to translate. Anyone can help?
We were talking about whether a girl likes you or your money. 1. nhung ai yeu that long cach ho do'i su quan tam anh se biet (But anyone love true heart different from those .... you will know) What is "do'i su quan tam"? 2. co ay hieu thao voi gd thi 1 thang anh co' the cho co ay cho gd 1 it tien nhu vay chang tot hon sao (She wants to fulfill her duty with family then 1 month you can give her family some money. Like that, it is better, isn't it?) How to translate "chang" here? Normally, chang means "negative", but I think here only "nhu vay tot hon sao" is enough.

Re: Tieng Viet lovers club
The condotel has landed
================================== The condo-hotel is an alien concept for Vietnam but developers now believe the time is right to introduce this product to the market. Duc Hanh examines what the attractions are for investors and owners So, first of all, what is a condo-hotel or a condotel? It’s a condominium project, which is operated as a hotel with a registration desk, cleaning service and more. It’s a popular concept around the world, but brand new to Vietnam. Second question – what’s the appeal? The units are individually owned giving owners the option to rent out their unit via the hotel’s rental programme. Holidaymakers can rent the room out like any other hotel room, except they can enjoy those homely extras – such as a fully-equipped kitchen – while availing of all the luxury amenities like a swimming pool, a fitness center or 24-hour service. Typically condotels are high-rise buildings in either major cities or holiday destinations. Owners can enjoy the benefits of the hotel chain’s marketing campaigns to lure in renters and trust the management to ensure a comfortable stay. Pros and cons There are pros and cons to condotel ownership. Pros include rental income to offset ownership expenses, a great vacation home, a cared-for home and potential price appreciation. On the down side, you might have to make a reservation for your own unit several days or weeks in advance. There are risks associated with all hotel ownership as well, such as occupancy rates that might be based on general economic conditions or the potential destruction of the property. Currently in Vietnam property developers have shifted their investment to this promising new real-estate segment. With the advantages of a long coast with a string of beautiful beaches, there is plenty of potential for further condotel development. Nha Trang Plaza the pioneer Known as the first condotel project in Vietnam, Nha Trang Plaza Hotel is a 40-storey building providing 240 luxurious five-star apartments of 126-280sqm in size. Located on the coconut-tree-lined Tran Phu street in one of the world’s most beautiful bays, Nha Trang Plaza blends in naturally with the environment offering guests a welcome break from the worries of the world in a truly stunning setting. After Nha Trang Plaza Hotel, a vast number of condotel projects have been deployed. Olalani Resort & Condotel on Bac My An beach in Danang features three large villas, 88 apartments and 197 hotel rooms with high-end services including a spa, a mini-golf course, a casino and a water sports centre. Ocean Vista Condotel is a five star project in Phan Thiet in the central province of Binh Thuan owned by Rang Dong Construction Corporation, which also features hotel rooms, villas and “condotel units” with luxury services including use of a golf course. Investors of these condotel projects nurture great ambitions to bring their clients attractive investment and lifestyle opportunities. Timeshare possibilities also mean guests can exchange units with other timeshare owners from associated resorts around the world. A burgeoning sector In the forthcoming period, Song Da Thang Long JSC will launch the condotel Dragon-Pia project in Nha Trang. The project covers an area of nearly 22,000sqm in An Vien sea-tourist complex by Nha Trang Bay with a cultural centre, public services, shopping outlets, sports centre and an international standard marina. The project, which is scheduled to be completed by 2013, includes 240 luxury apartments with four-star services and facilities. Nguyen Tri Dung, general director of Thang Long Song Da Joint Stock Co, said Nha Trang was an ideal place for building condo-hotels. Therefore, after carefully researching the market, the company decided to develop their property as a four-star condotel which is expected to bring more profit to investors, he said. The key factor The difference and advantage of condotel projects, in fact, is that it’s an investment with double profit. Customers can own an apartment in a luxury hotel managed by branded hotel management group in a famous tourist destination as well as affirming their “high-end status” when staying at the apartment and enjoying preferential treatment and hotel services. However, the development of condotel in fact depends on policies to attract tourists and MICE by local authorities and industries. The success of condotel projects in Bali, Indonesia or Phuket, Thailand has been down to a comprehensive support system, including access to an international airport, positive promotion of tourism by local authorities, prestigious branding and reputable services. These elements attract high-end tourists and make them return to invest in property projects. In Vietnam the concern is that investors only care about an increase in property price and a quick flip. Investors may be less concerned about the other elements, which create the value of the product and help develop the sector on a sound and sustainable basis. Source: Timeout

Re: Tieng Viet lovers club
Wedding day blues
======================== VietNamNet Bridge - As the bride’s family foots the bill at a Co Ho wedding party, families with a lot of nubile daughters are often left facing bankruptcy. After a long chat, finally, Ka Hinh, a 57-year old Co Ho woman from Di Linh’s Gung Re commune, agrees to talk about her least favourite topic – weddings. “A wedding party must be a massive celebration, otherwise the bride’s family will be looked down upon,” says Ka Hinh with a rueful shrug. It is a Co Ho tradition that the bride’s family foots the bill. Ka Hinh shakes her head in disgust at the memory of her own daughter’s wedding five years ago, an event which left her family riddled with debts. There is an estimated population of over 100,000 Co Ho living mostly in Binh Thuan and Lam Dong provinces. In Ka Hinh’s commune there are nearly 2,100 households, mainly Co-ho people, who are living off coffee or maize cultivation. She claims many Co Ho families are living in poverty as a result of indulgent weddings parties. When Ka Hinh’s daughter, Ka Sac turned 16 years old, she met a young man living in the next village. Ka Sac soon asked her parents to visit the man’s family, saying that she wanted to marry the man. There are some stricts rules for this traditional affair. The initial meeting must be held late at night, when locals believe that all the genies can witness it and agree on the marriage of the couple. A lucky day is then selected for an engagement ceremony. On that day the groom’s family will bring cash, chickens, liquor and jewellery to the bride’s home. The two family heads will consult the bride’s ancestors and as long as everything goes well, a wedding will be held some months later, normally in spring when the weather is warm. On that occasion the bride’s parents will visit the groom’s home with chicken and liquor, asking for the family’s permission to take the groom back to their home. After that a party is organised and the whole village is invited. Interestingly, it’s a matriarchal society – after the wedding, the groom will live with his wife’s family and the children will bear their mother’s surname. Sac’s husband’s family demanded a fair bit in return for the loss of a son. This is not unusual, says Ka Hinh. “There is no ruling for such demands,” says Ka Hinh. “The groom’s family has the right to ask us for whatever they want. If we didn’t meet their demands, Sac would not have been able to marry their son.” Sadly pride is at stake. It’s not honourable to baulk at demands or cancel the wedding. “Then Sac would be considered charmless, and she would not be able to find anyone after that. We have to accept her husband’s family’s demands,” says Ka Hinh, who claims Sac’s marriage cost her family VND40 million ($2,105). That’s equivalent to 40 months of hard labour for Ka Hinh’s family. “And that’s excluding two buffaloes and three pigs we provided as offerings,” she adds with a sigh. “We borrowed a lot from relatives. Only one fifth of it has been paid off.” According to Ka Hinh’s husband, K’Rich in the past, people offered buffaloes, cows, pigs, gongs, skirts and jewellery. “Today, everything is calculated in cash and gold,” says K’Rich. But this bitter couple is perhaps luckier than some. Next door, their neighbour has six eligible daughters, but no one is allowed to get married as the family claim they can’t afford a wedding party. In Di Linh district’s Gia Bac commune where a large number of Co Ho people live, I meet a 50-year-old by the name of K’s Loc, who is cleaning his gongs in preparation for an upcoming performance at his niece’s wedding. Asked about the customs of Co Ho weddings, he claims that the bride’s family’s must present the groom’s family with expensive clothes, handkerchiefs and cash. “Ten years ago, maybe you could give VND2 to VND3 million ($105.2 - $157.9), but now families might have to offer as much as VND30 to VND40 million ($1,578 - $2,105),” says K’s Loc. If the bride’s family is poor, they can give the groom’s family the gifts, while the cash can be taken on as a debt. The groom can move to the bride’s house, but the wedding can take place only when the debt is paid off. “It’s true that many families have fallen into poverty because of their children’s weddings. Many couples cannot hold a wedding ceremony as they are yet to pay debts though they have lived with each other and had kids,” K’s Loc says. “Families with many daughters are living in awful poverty. When the parents die, the kids will inherit nothing but debts.” Source: Time-out
