But marriages like this are hardly out of the ordinary in Indonesia.

According to UNICEF, one in six Indonesian girls marry before they turn 18, which is equal to 340,000 girls a year. About 50,000 wed before they turn 15.
In Indonesia,as long as the ger reach a age tat they can lai ang, they can be married off liao loh....

Indo Police dispose confiscated fireworks end with 17 building damaged

Indonesia Police decide to dispose of confiscated fireworks by setting them on fire, end with 17 buildings damaged during explosion

As you may be aware from their annual steamrolling of confiscated alcohol before Ramadan, the Indonesian Police often like to make a big show out of the disposal of confiscated illegal goods. But the police in Central Java’s Kebumen regency seem to have made a bit of a miscalculation when they decided to get rid of 287 kg of illegal fireworks… by lighting them on fire.

The explosion took place near Kebumen’s Gemeksekti Village on Monday afternoon. At the beginning of the 14-seconds video, the onlookers seem impressed by the large plumes of white smoke coming off of the burning contraband and let out a woo when the color suddenly flares orange, moments before an enormous explosion shakes the camera and causes screams of terror as the onlookers scatter.

The massive explosion caused the windows of about 17 buildings in the village, mostly homes but one mosque as well, to either crack or shatter. There was also damage to some walls and ceilings.

The explosion was said to be quite extremely loud and could be heard several kilometers away. Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries caused by the incident, although one woman was taken to the hospital due to shock.

After the above video of the explosion started going viral online, it was confirmed that it was, in fact, caused by the police’s disposal of illegal fireworks.

Kebumen Police Chief Titi Hastuti said his officers had been disposing of 287 kg of illegal fireworks that had been confiscated by 24 people throughout Ramadan thus far.

Police Sergeant Krida Risanto said that firework disposal was actually done in accordance with their procedures using explosive-proof ‘bomb baskets’ and that they had no idea the explosion would be large enough to cause damage to buildings.

“All damages will be fixed by [the police],” Krida promised after meeting with residents, as quoted by Suara Merdeka.

This is not the first time that a police evidence disposal display has backfired in Indonesia. In 2015, West Jakarta Police burned 3.3 tons of marijuana in a large field, leading several witnesses to complain that they felt “dizzy” due to the strong smoke.

Police ‘discover’ luxury cell equipped with AC & WiFi at Jakarta’s Cipinang Prison

While corruption is know to permeate many Indonesian governmental institutions, the country’s prison system is notorious for stories of breathtaking corruption that has allowed, in the past, for well-heeled inmates to routinely leave prisons for outside trips and even international vacations while staying in luxurious cells equipped with everything from karaoke machines and big screen TVs to private ‘love chambers’ and even maids.

The government has vowed numerous times to clean up the prisons and fire officials that run their correctional facilities like resorts, but, clearly, they need to keep working on the problem as yet another luxury cell was recently ‘discovered’ in East Jakarta’s Cipinang prison.

The head of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), Budi Waseso (who famously pushed for the creation of an island prison for drug dealers surrounded by man-eating crocodiles) said that his investigators came across the well-appointed cell while investigating a money laundering case that led them to the prison

“The discovery came when the BNN investigative team looking into the crime of money laundering conducted a search of a Cipinang Prison cell on May 31, 2017, which was inhabited by convict Haryanto Chandra alias Gombak,” Budi said today at BNN headquarters as quoted by Tribunnews.

Haryanto Chandra was sentenced to 14 years in prison in 2014 under Indonesia’s harsh drug trafficking laws. But it seems like his time hasn’t been that hard so far, as BNN found his cell to contain air condition, a WiFi internet connection, a laptop and iPad to utilize the WiFi as well as four mobile phones.

According to Budi, it also included an aquarium and a special menu for ordering food. Oh, and they also found crystal meth.

Investigators were able to recover about Rp 9.6 billion of the money Haryanto was suspected of laundering, but the BNN chief did not mention what, if any, steps were taken to rectify the situation in the prison.

Many Indonesians support the death penalty for drug dealers because they believe that they can simply continue to run their businesses from behind bars while still enjoy the perks of their profits. And for good reason, since it was proven that some, such as infamous drug kingpin Freddy Budiman who was executed last year, were doing just that.

‘Online taxi’ driver stripped and humiliated at Yogyakarta airport ...for violating pick-up rule

Cars for ride-hailing companies like Uber and Grab, locally known in Indonesia as “online taxis”, are generally allowed to drop off and pick up passengers at airports provided they observe some rules so as not to clash with conventional taxis.

One online taxi driver in the city of Yogyakarta was allegedly humiliated after he picked up a passenger where he wasn’t supposed to at the city’s Adisutjipto Airport.

According to reports, the driver, identified as F, dropped off a passenger at the airport’s Terminal B at around 8pm on Sunday. He then picked up another passenger from the terminal, despite there being a regulation that online taxis can only pick up passengers from the immigration office 200 meters from the terminal.

“Right at that moment, a provost military police officer told F to get out of the car, take off his shirt and apologize. The passenger said they were wrong, but (the officer) didn’t care,” said Yogyakarta online taxi drivers association spokesman Daniel, as quoted by Detik today.

In videos of the incident that have gone viral, F was shown to have been sitting topless inside the airport terminal, with many people watching, while being forced to say his apologies repeatedly.

What the videos did not show was that he was later allegedly made to apologize to every single conventional taxi driver at the airport before being let go at around 11pm.

“Usually (online taxi drivers who violate rules at the airport) are just told to leave or pay a fine. Why did they have to humiliate him? I deeply condemn this incident,” Daniel told Detik.

The Yogyakarta Police said they will launch an investigation into the incident, while airport management firm PT Angkasa Pura I said the airport’s conventional taxi drivers, not military police officers, were the ones who stripped and humiliated F in retaliation for supposedly stealing their customers.

Indonesian thieves toss cash onto street to distract pursuers...

Indonesian thieves toss cash onto street to distract pursuers, one escapes, police ask public to return money

Stolen money isn’t any good to a thief if they get caught, so spending a part of their illegal earnings to ensure escape doesn’t seem like a bad idea. Two thieves in the Indonesian city of Palembang in South Sumatra made that calculation while literally on the run, and it actually worked, for one of them. The other one, not so much.

The incident took place yesterday at around 2pm. The thieves were staking out a bank in search of customers making large cash withdrawals (something many Indonesians do before the Eid holiday).

The thieves followed a 44-year-old man, Syah Budi, who had just withdrawn Rp 20 million ($1,500) in cash, out to his car. They then set up nails on the road to deflate the car’s tires. When Shah got out of the car to fix them, the thieves quickly took the cash from the car.

However, Budi’s son saw the theft and yelled at the pair. Budi realized what had happened and yelled at them too as they ran away.

As it was the middle of the day on a busy street, there was no shortage of onlookers to the crime. So the thieves panicked and tossed part of their purloined profits onto the ground to distract them.

As you can see from the video, quite a lot people stop to pick up the bills, but not everybody was distracted. As the camera pans down the street you can see a small mob of people surrounding the one thief who was unlucky enough to get caught. You see him take a few vicious blows from the crowd and the video ends with them surrounding him closely.

Police eventually apprehended the mob-caught criminal and later identified him as a 25-year-old named Nurdiansyah, who claimed that he turned to theft because he was desperate to make money before the Eid holiday.

And what about all of that street cash….

“The amount of money taken by the victim from the bank was Rp 20 million. We managed to secure more than Rp 9 million of that, while over Rp 10 million was taken by people passing by the incident,” said officer Hadi Wijaya of the Palembang Police on Wednesday night as quoted by Detik.

“We hope that people will have the good will to return the money, because, after all, it belongs to the victim of a crime,” Hadi added.

We’ll just have to wait to find out how many of those people will have the good will to return the stolen money.

818 Jakarta civil servants failed to show up at work on 1st day after Eid holiday, all will lose a month’s allowance

Nobody likes going back to work after the holidays, but Indonesian civil servants are especially notorious for failing to show up at the office after the Lebaran break. It’s such a big problem that some, like the mayor of Magelang, have tried rewarding civil servants for showing up to work on the first day after the Eid break, but the Jakarta Government is taking a harsher stance.

The head of Jakarta’s Regional Personnel Agency, Agus Suradika, said that a staggering 818 Jakarta civil servants failed to show up at their offices on Monday, although he said that number included employees who might have had legitimate reasons for not showing up to work such as sudden illness.

Jakarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat said that he would sanction all civil servants who were absent by not giving them their Regional Performance Allowance (TKD) for one month. The TKD is the stipend given to government employees to cover miscellaneous costs such as transportation and varies in size depending on the job,

Djarot said such employees should be dealt with harshly, as they had already been given 10 days of holiday over Lebaran. He also said that he would not be lenient on those enabling absenteeism.

“If there is a boss who covers his subordinates who do not come to work, then his boss also hit,” Djarot said as quoted by Tempo.

It seems the stricter rules set up by Djarot’s predecessor, the now jailed Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, have been effective in improving discipline. While 818 is a lot, it’s nothing compared to the 6,072 Jakarta civil servants who failed to show up to work on the first day after the Lebaran break in 2016. So…is there progress?
