Office workers hunting for “royal food” to present Tet gifts to bosses
================================================== =========

VietNamNet Bridge – What to buy for Tet gifts to bosses is now the headache of many office workers. Expensive “royal food” which is good to human heath is the choice of many people.

Bosses nowadays don’t need money, need good health

Tet is the good opportunity for office workers to present gifts to their bosses that serve their job promotion. Therefore, even in the current economic difficulties, where people have to fasten their belt, they are still willing to spend millions of dong for Tet gifts to the bosses.

In previous years, “envelops with money inside”, wooden furniture and feng shui decoration things were the biggest choices. However, people’s thoughts seem to have changed and they now tend to choose nutritious food for their bosses.

“The bosses now have everything they want, from money to villas. Therefore, what they want to have to is just the good health,” an officer commented.

Nguyen Thi Lan, officer of a construction company headquartered on Phan Dinh Phung Street, said that she is racking her brain about what to buy for the boss. Last year, she gave the boss a bottle of wine her husband bought during a foreign business trip to Russia. Of course, the bottle of wine was very expensive, about 500 dollars, or 10 million dong, which was equal to the monthly income of a middle class Vietnamese office worker.

“The boss liked the bottle of wine very much. And my business has been going very smoothly so far,” she said.

Lan went on to say that she is planning to buy either salangane’s nests, shark fin or abalone. “I have been told that these products are very good to human health, therefore, I believe that the boss will be satisfactory with the gifts.” Lan said.

“The art in presenting gifts is choosing the rare and precious things which the boss likes,” she added.

Le Ngoc Minh on Doi Can Street complains that she still has not decided what to buy. “My boss has everything already. She is very keen on perfume and cosmetics, therefore, it would be better not to buy these products,” she said.

Minh said she has been told to buy salangane’s nests, priced at 3-5 million dong per 100 gram. This is very good to people’s health, especially, this helps women stay young for a long time.

“When the boss feels satisfactory with the gifts, you will succeed”

The owner of Lan Ca Shop at Dong Xuan Market, the biggest wholesale market in the north, said that a lot of people have come to buy “royal food” such as salangane’s nests, shark fins for the Tet gifts to the bosses this year.

Specialty shark fin is priced at 15 million dong per kilo, while preliminarily treated shark fin is sold at 9 million dong, while the products of lower classes are sold at 8-10 million dong. As for salangane’s nests, wild birds’ nests are very expensive, about 22 million dong per 100 grams, while farmed birds are cheaper, just 3-5 million dong per 100 grams.

The salesmen at Dong Xuan Market tell buyers that they can feel about the quality of the products and the prices when buying the royal food here. The sale prices would be 1.5-2 times higher if people buy the same products on Lan Ong Street, which has been well known as the Chinese traditional medicine street.

However, the commitments of the salesmen at the Dong Xuan Market just make people half-believe. Tran The Loi, the officer of a computer company, said that he cannot be sure about the quality of the products sold at the markets. “My sister is working for Horison Hotel, and it would be better to ask her buy specialty food for me. This will help avoid counterfeit products,” Loi said.

Meanwhile, Huong, a bank officer, said that she has placed order directly with a production workshop in Nha Trang City.

More overseas Vietnamese flock to HCM City for Tet holiday
================================================== =======

The number of overseas Vietnamese coming back to the motherland to enjoy the Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday via HCMC is projected to increase substantially over the same period last year, said Tran Hoa Phuong, deputy head of the HCMC Committee for Overseas Vietnamese.

Phuong gave no statistics on the number, but said he predicted a strong increase given difficulties in booking air tickets as well as an increase in flights to cater to the strong demand.

“It is hard to book flight tickets since the seat occupancy is fully occupied,” Phuong reckoned.

As uncertainties in the world economy increase, more overseas Vietnamese choose the country as a destination for their festive holiday due to the lower cost of living back home.

The number of Vietnamese going back to Vietnam via Tan Son Nhat Airport reached 400,000 people in last year’s Tet.

It is estimated that over 500,000 people would come back for Tet holidays in 2011 compared to the previous year’s number of 480,000 for the whole country, according to the National Committee for Overseas Vietnamese.

Overseas remittance flowed into Vietnam through HCMC-based banks increased to US$5 billion last year from the previous level of US4.15 billion a year before.

In fact, the amount of remittance poured into Vietnam in 2011 would be likely higher than the given figure because overseas Vietnamese also sent their money via unofficial channels.

The World Bank has earlier reported that remittance poured into Vietnam last year was estimated to reach US$9 billion, showing a 10% year-on-year increase.

New Year wishes of the poor
=====================================
For many people, the New Year means a burden of worry or something else, not a time for celebration.

With the traditional lunar New Year festival approaching, poor people have felt pressure to save at least enough for a good meal to offer on the altar in the home for their late relatives, and for offering small gifts to children.

At 8 pm, in a thatch house in An Lac Tay Commune of Ke Sach District in Soc Trang Province, Doan Thi Dep hangs up the mosquito net for her three and seven-year-old children to go to bed, and then rushes to a drain near her house to collect snails.

The 40-year-old woman swam into the water in cold weather. Though the job is hard, Dep always thinks of her children, who would otherwise be hungry during Tet when she is unemployed. Now, she does not even have rice in her house to feed the children. Thinking of her children motivates her to work harder.

Dep, whose husband left her and the children when they were quite young, has no farmland. She has to do odd jobs in order to survive and feed her family.

Every hour, Dep collects 3 kilograms of snails, which can be sold for VND20,000 (US$1). The money is barely enough for her to buy rice, not to mention to buy new clothes for the children to celebrate Tet.

“By working hard this season, I hope to save enough money to pay my debt and later, for sure, I will have to borrow money again to celebrate Tet,” she said.

Dep is not alone.

In the darkness of mid-night in the Mekong Delta’s Chau Thanh District, Tien Giang Province, amid the shoulders of youngsters, Le Van Lien, who is now 59 years old, carefully and quickly carried heavy packages of fruit to the trucks waiting at Vinh Kim fruit market.

Wiping away sweat falling from his forehead, Lien stopped and quickly ate a small piece of sticky rice he had brought along. “There are several jobs around the end of the year, and I work harder to support my two children, who study in the city.”

His usual working shift begins at twilight and ends at dawn the next morning. In the days approaching Tet, he begins working at 11 am, and goes until the next morning. Every day, he works for more than 20 hours for a wage of VND200,000 (US$10).

“My wife asked me to work less, fearing that I will get sick after working so hard. She hopes that I earn just enough money for her to make a few dishes to worship her father during Tet,” Lien recalled his wife’s words and then resumed working.

At 1:00 am, under the dim glow of the neon lights at a small workshop that processes coconut shells in Ben Tre Province’s Khanh Thanh Tan Commune, couple Ngo Van Ve and Nguyen Thi Vien were quickly husking coconuts.

Pausing for a while, Vien said: “In my health condition, I have to work and then immediately rest. I will get sick if I work with all of my effort.

Vien says this, but she does differently. She is eager and agrees right away when somebody calls her for another job, day and night.

Vo Van Hai and his wife, of the same commune, share the thoughts of Ve and Vien. On recent nights, Hai has to peel eight to ten pallets of coconuts. Each pallat contains 200 pieces of fruit. He earns VND150,000 to 200,000 (US$8-10) for each working night.

“I am still young and I am healthy enough to work at night. However, I will not be able to do this job when I get older, because it is pretty hard,” Hai said.

In a corner of Vinh Kim fruit market, Hoang Van Hai and his wife, who are now 60 years old, were watching their baskets of sapodilla plum and waiting for people to come and buy them.

“We have to carry the fruit to this area and give them directly to dealers, so that we can sell them at a better price,” Hai said.

Every night at mid night, the aging couple pulls and pushes their self-modified vehicle, loaded with fruit, to the market to find customers. Their family has seven people, so the couple has to work harder for a better price.

Dinh Thi Em, of An Thanh Village, An Lac Tay Commune, whose husband and son have to work as bricklayers, picks fruit to earn money.

When night falls, she makes fake eyelashes, along with her daughter. For each pair of eyelashes, she earns VND1,200. Each night, she and her daughter earn VND12.000 (US$0.5) from the job.

Em’s husband suffered a serious accident when he was picking coconuts for money. Though he knows he is in bad heatlh, he tries his best to work as a brick layer in order to have money which can be used when he is unemployed.

Each working day, Em earns VND80,000 (US$3.8), and an additional VND40,000 (US$1.9) for working at night. He is trying his best to pay off his debt of VND10 million (US$476), which he borrowed to build his house.

Tuan, another person who also lives under the poverty line, does not ask for much for this Tet. “A kilogram of meat is enough for me to celebrate Tet.”

HCM City: Over 100,000 Viettel mobile subscribers suspended
================================================== ========

VietNamNet Bridge – HCM City authorities have asked Viettel, one of the top three mobile networks in Vietnam, to stop supplying its services to 114,352 mobile subscribers which are using pre-paid services, who registered services with wrong personal information.

This is the second time within less than 10 days that HCM City authorities have requested mobile networks to stop providing services to subscribers who violate the rules.

Earlier, on December 28, 2011, the city decided to suspend 37,000 mobile subscribers, including 23,000 of Viettel. The city also imposed VND30 million ($1,500) of fine each on three telecom service providers – Viettel, MobiFone and Vinaphone.

The city has also asked all telecom service providers to check information registered by their subscribers and no longer provider services to violators.

The HCM City Department of Information and Communications is told to ask telecom service providers to provide necessary information on mobile subscribers for continuing its check.

The department will have to submit the plan on management of mobile subscribers to submit to the HCM City People’s Committee before January 15.
