Foreign tourists still ripped off in Vietnam

Many foreign tourists visiting Vietnam have continued to be disturbed by local beggars, street vendors, and even worse -- ripped off by taxi drivers and restaurants.

Not long after a Thai tourist had been forced to pay VND10 million (around US$500) for a 6-kg fish at a fishing village in Ha Long Bay in the northern province of Quang Ninh, Tuoi Tre received waves of reports on similar scams in tourism hotspots all around the country.

Huynh Cong Hieu, for instance, a tour guide working for the company Saigontourist, said a foreign visitor had told him that he was ripped off by a taxi driver, who charged him VND900,000 ($43.2) for a route of less than 2 kilometers - from Ben Thanh Market to Saigon Port, last December.

“The tourist had since been frightened by the taxi drivers, and had to ask me to hail a taxi for him, to avoid being overcharged again,” said Hieu.

Cao Tri Dung, director of Da Nang-based Vitours travel agency, said one of his Japanese partners had been taken around downtown HCMC downtown for 45 minutes, while he only needed to travel from Ben Thanh Market to Suong Nguyet Anh Street, only 1km away.

“The driver then charged him VND300,000 ($14), ten times higher than the real cost,” said Dung.

Similarly, Hung, a freelance tour guide, said he once witnessed a foreign backpacker being forced to have his shoes polished by two shoeblacks in Hanoi.

“Upon receiving the shoes which had been sparsely polished, the foreign man paid the two VND10,000,” recalled Hung.

“However, the shoeblacks then became aggressive and repeatedly insulted him, forcing him pay them VND100,000.”

For her part, Bui Viet Thuy Tien, director of Asian Trails travel agency, said many of her customers had complained that they were upset by the fact that they still had to pay for the food at high prices that would not be out of place at a European restaurant, though they were traveling in Vietnam.

Some tourists said they had to buy the iced coconuts from the street vendors at $2 each, which is five times higher than the normal price.

While tourists said such a rip-off is quite acceptable since they bought the fruits on the street, they said it indeed irritated them to be similarly overcharged in large restaurants.

“Tourists have been introduced to Vietnamese foods that are delicious, nutritious, and cheap, but what they really experience in the country is totally the opposite,” said Tien.

“Many tourists complained that they had to pay as much as $70 for a meal for two in a restaurant in HCMC,” said Duc Tuan, a freelance tour guide.

Meanwhile, Le Dinh Tuan, CEO of Viet Excursions, said his tourism boat carrying foreign tourists on excursions in Ha Long Bay have repeatedly been disturbed by women carrying children stepping on board to beg for money.

They would not get off the boats until they received some money, said Tuan, adding his companies have received a huge number of complaints about this.

“We have reported the issue to the management board of Ha Long Bay, as well as the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of Quang Ninh, but nothing has ever changed,” lamented Tuan.

“Thus, we have decided to stop sending tourist boats to Ha Long as of this April.”

Multi-million dong twin simcards hunted for Valentine Day

VietNamNet Bridge – Roses and chocolate have become uninspiring for many couples which highly appreciate original gifts. Therefore, a lot of people have been hunting for twin simcards to give as gifts to wives and girlfriends on the 2012’s Valentine Day.

Striving to have a memorable Valentine Day, Trung, a civil engineer in Ha Dong district has ordered a pair of simcards for him and his fiancé. Trung said that over the last five years, the couple mostly gave each other roses and chocolate, but he wants to make a breakthrough this year.

The requirements Trung has set prove to be very complicated. The twin simcards must have the suffixes “332007” to mark the day the two officially loved each other. The simcards must have 10 numerals and they must be issued by one of the three biggest mobile networks (VinaPhone, MobiFone or Viettel).

“Chocolate and roses are the symbol of the love. However, I want a special gift this year. The simcards would help connect us, especially if they have nearly the same numerals,” Trung said.

He has revealed that in order to have the special gift, Trung has to spent a lot of money. The simcard providers, who Trung has contacted, all have asked for the high prices of no less than five million dong. Trung has to wait 5-7 days to get the things he ordered.

Though Hau, a small merchant at the Dong Xuan Market, does not set too strict requirements for the twin simcards, she still had to spend nearly 10 million dong. Two weeks after ordering, she received a pair of simcards with the numbers 09xxx36123 and 09xxx36456, in which the numerals in the middle are exactly the same, while the three last numerals are also special “123” and “456”.

Hau said that the simcard with “456” suffix was priced at nearly 5 million dong, while the one with “123” was priced at less than 2 million dong, if she bought it separately. However, in order to get the twin simcards which satisfy her requirements, Hau had to pay 8.5 million dong.

“The seller said that it is always very difficult to find the simcards which match each other,” Hau said. “Therefore, the twin simcards are always very expensive.”

According to Hung, who has five year experience in simcard trading, the tendency of using twin cards has existed over the last three years. Valentine Day is the best business time for him.

In general, the buyers want the simcards which comprise nearly the same numerals, and only one numeral could be different. For example, 86.6789 and 68.6789.

Also according to Hung, there are two types of twin cards with big price differences. The simcards of big mobile networks, or the twin cards with the numerals significant to buyers or lucky numbers as thought by orient people, are always very expensive. Meanwhile, the simcards of small mobile networks can be found more easily. Especially, the simcards of the new networks are very cheap, just hundreds of thousands of dong per a couple.

As lovers have the high demand of talking with each other through phones, simcard traders try to provide the simcards with big accounts, or the simcards which allow making free calls for less than 10 minutes. As the simcards are being hunted by couples, they would be 100,000-250,000 dong more expensive.

Simcard trading has become a profitable business. Bao, the owner of a simcard on Kim Ma Street in Hanoi, said that he has sold two couples of simcards since the Tet holiday finished, while he needs to fulfill three more orders.

When I first came to HCMC, I was surprised that there are big differences between Valentine’s Day in Japan and Vietnam.

For example, in Vietnam, a man would give sweets, flowers or gifts to his ladybut in Japan, it is only the women who give presents (mainly chocolates) to men. In my opinion, Japanese women are usually too shy to express their love in daily life (it might not be true nowadays though). That is why Valentine's Day was thought to be a great opportunity to let women express their emotions. Now the chocolate companies in Japan sell more than half of their annual sales during the week before Valentine's Day. Men are supposed to return gifts to women on a day called "White Day" (March 14th), a Japanese creation.

Women give chocolates not only to their loved ones ("A true love" chocolate is called "Honmei-choko"), they also give "Giri-choko" (the chocolate given to male bosses, colleagues or friends that women have no romantic interest in) just for friendship or gratitude. The concept of "giri" is very Japanese. It is a mutual obligation that the Japanese follow when dealing with other people. If someone does you a favor, then you feel obligated to do something for that person.

Asa man, I have never done anything on Valentine’s Day. Fortunately, I’ve been able to receive some chocolates every year when I was in Japan. This will be my Valentine’s Day in Vietnam. Since I am single at present, I don’t have the opportunity to give something special to my girl. I could just give some "Giri-choko" to my employees and female business partners. Also, I might go to my favorite shop, Flower Box, on Hai Ba Trung Street (District 1) to buy bouquets of flowers to give to the girls I adore.

Honestly speaking, I do not think my Valentine’s Day alone will be boring and lonely. Preferably, I will spend the evening working or reading a favorite book.

As far as I know, there are people who decide to share their lonely hearts with the poor, at charity events and the like, on this occasion. To me, participating in these social activities is good, but we do not need to try to spend our time with someone just to forget our loneliness in real life. Be patient and be confident in yourself. Someone ideal will come to you eventually when you know how to take care of yourself optimistically and wisely.
