From the very start, this Singapore airline has struggled to make a profit, has one of the worst customer service, poor PR and has been talk of the aviation industry especially in Australia about it's questionable operations. IPO has been pushed a number of times until 2010.

It's is directly and indirectly majority owned by Temasek. SIA has 3 seats and Temasek's investment arm has 1 seat.

Sometime in 2006 I asked a retired SIA executive why would SIA want to be associated with an airline that has such a bad reputation especially in customer service bearing in mind that SIA branding cornerstone is customer service. This chap was defensive and suggested that they were passive to avoid a conflict of interest. I drew the conclusion that he was unsure or never approved of the model and bearing in mind the politics of Ho Ching, Singaporeans tend to be meek and compliant and this is not an exception. There was also no JY Pillay to act as the moral compass and bulwark to unprofessional interference.

Then we have Tony Davis, the CEO. The word rude would be an understatement. The consolation is that he is universally rude to all, including governments, Caucasians, senior executives of MNCs etc. When all airlines were facing high level of ticket fraud via the Internet, most agreed to start taking measures to cut the trend. Tony had other ideas. High sales, near capacity cabins are a must for the makings of a successful IPO, so let sales go thru, fraudulent or not, industry pressure had to come in before he got the message.

Two things struck me, the appointment of female CEO for Singapore, a Singaporean and Female CEO for the Australian arm, a South African. An industry known to be male oriented due to it's heavy reliance on engineering and engineering safety. Both had no engineering background. One came from a heavily marketing background and we talking about advertising firms. The other did have some airline background but in finance and rather young. But Tony was not into diversity.

To complete any good drama, you need the proverbial Mother Theresa and Mandela to give the bad paintwork, the sheen of a purring Ferrari. Remember the IPO needs to be launched. Enter Gerard Ee and Po'ad Matter. Mother Theresa needs no introduction. Po'ad Matter is a low profile but highly regarded retired former accountant and chief of one of the big four, member of PSC and one of the Presidential Advisors. Knowing both of them, money and profile is not on the agenda. So why did they get out of bed. Well the usual national service call as it is after all a Temasek company. And our lady had to impress a Texan and Irishmen along the way. Their only mistake is reading the Straits Times and nothing else. Try writing less than favourable comments on a Temasek company.

On Thursday, a Tiger Aiways flight into Melbourne's Avalon Airport flew below the minimum flight level when coming into land. In March, the Australian authorities issued a showcase letter for safety concerns. Those in Singapore might not have known much due to our local prostitutes in Braddell Road but every sane individual had heard about Tiger and it's story long before that.

On Friday, the 1st, the Australian authorities grounded the entire airline. A first in their aviation history. All flights suspended, other airlines have been called into assist passenger movement.

By now a 34 year South African raised female bearing the title of CEO in Australia must be wondering what the meaning of patsy is.

Let me make it very simple to Gerard Ee of Dunbar Walk. The salary of Ministers after all is not a regulatory duty. But the Chairman of the Board of an Airline that has it's entire fleet grounded in Australia and the pilots required to undergo mandatory re-certification is. Watch the share price on Monday.

It's time that Gerard Ees and Mattars of Singapore take out their thumbs from their arse and tell their political masters the meaning of integrity.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) has grounded all domestic flights by the carrier until next Saturday because of "serious" safety concerns, including two cases of flying below the lowest safe altitude.

Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese says over 30,000 passengers will be affected by the grounding.

Cameron Buchanan at Sydney Airport says he has tickets to an event in Melbourne tonight and would have appreciated an alert from the airline.

"I've just shown up now, I've actually paid in advance for my parking, done all the things I need to do, and we've just found out the flights have been grounded for safety," he said.

"Now, I appreciate safety, but doing a text message, or something like that, or an email would have been really helpful just for my planning and organising other arrangements."

Other passengers also say they wish the airline had informed them about the cancellations earlier.

"My mother-in-law is stuck here at the moment, so I've got to get her home as well, that's the big problem," one said.

"Going home today, well I was going home today. I'm all for safety, but it's the inconvenience and not letting us know early enough," another said.

Lisa, stranded at Sydney airport, says affected passengers are now out of pocket hundreds of dollars and cannot expect compensation for several weeks.

"The fact is that they can't reimburse you straight away, you have to wait a couple of weeks," she said.

"So if you don't have that $600, or that money there, you don't get to your destination, so plans are... out the door.

"We're just one of the many people here today with the same frustrations."

Plane turned back

Celia Blackwood was on a Tiger flight from Melbourne to Cairns last night when the plane was forced to turn back because of the groundings.

She says the captain announced over the speaker that the "safety was paramount and the flight would be returning to Melbourne".

Ms Blackwood says a lot of people on the flight were scared, but the staff did not do anything to reassure them.

"I just wish they had have been clearer with what the reason was [for] why we were returning, she said.

"That it wasn't mechanical failure, it was a management directive or even a CASA directive, something that would have informed us and not treated us like idiots."

Passengers are being turned away from the Tiger terminal at Melbourne Airport this morning.

Airport spokeswoman Anna Gillet says it is a frustrating time for those travellers who booked flights for the school holidays.

"Today is a particularly busy time for us, we know it's really frustrating and we are doing what we can to assist but it is very unfortunate and we just definitely appreciate people's patience and cooperation, she said.

So I would encourage people to not come to Melbourne Airport but to speak to the Tiger Airways call centre."

In a statement, Tiger says it is cooperating fully with CASA.

It says passengers flying domestically between now and next Saturday should not go to the airport.

Customers affected will receive a full refund or credit for deferred travel.

Virgin Australia, Qantas and Jetstar are putting on additional services over the next week to accommodate affected Tiger Airways passengers.

'Dropping standards'

CASA says it is the first time it has grounded an airline.

"Tiger has not been able to, at this stage, convince us that they can continue operations safely, so that's why they're on the ground," CASA spokesman Peter Gibson said.

"We believe this is symptomatic of problems within the airline [and] we've put them on the ground while we consider all these issues."

Some aviation analysts say the grounding could spell the end for Tiger in Australia.

Ben Sandilands is the author of the Crikey blog Plane Talking.

"Tiger's history in Australia has been an extremely poor one," he said.

"It has a management which seems to be completely oblivious to its obligations under Australian law.

"I've been monitoring this since Tiger began flying and they say various things but they totally failed to obey the regulations in this country and CASA came under new management over a year ago and its new CEO takes the view that the law must be enforced.

"He has enforced the law, the course will give Tiger an opportunity to argue that this suspension should not be kept in place. But I think it has done extraordinary damage to Tiger in this country."

While not wanting to comment specifically on the grounding of Tiger, Australian and International Pilots Association president Captain Barry Jackson says it is not a surprise.

"I'm concerned as we have been, as I say, for quite a while about the dropping standards in the airline industry, particularly in the low-cost sector," he said.

"Because we are driving to lower and lower costs, the public expects lower and lower airfares."

He says he is also concerned that an airline has flown below the lowest altitude considered safe.

"In cloud there's a minimum set of altitudes around airports and particularly when you're approaching an airport, those minimum standards give a buffer above terrain," he said.

"There's a safety margin in there but it is the absolute minimum if in cloud. If you can't see the ground you must not go below those altitudes so it's pretty serious."

Mr Albanese says Tiger could seek an injunction against the flight ban.

A CASA spokesman says the authority is considering whether it needs to go to the Federal Court to extend the grounding.

A bit of info on Stadium, I got from the net.
Hope this could help you bro.

Best disco in Jakarta for me, Stadium can be extremely crowded on week-ends and for special events. It has four flours, each supposedly with different themes but tribal techno/progressive is dominant. Stadium is big enough to get you lost and so dark you could not recognize your mom if she was dancing 1 meter away from you.

The atmosphere inside the club is unique: A melting-pot of human misery with an underground feel and with drugs and prostitutes easily available (just ask the waiters). You will find all kind of people partying hard in Stadium: taxi drivers, socialites, bosses, students, expatriates, etc...As it is open until very late in the morning (9am during the week, later during the weekend), it is where all the nightlife ends in Jakarta, once all the other bars and clubs have closed. It has the reputation of staying open 60 hours non-stop from Friday to Monday morning, but this is true only for the karaoke.

If you come for the music, you will need to go to the 4th floor, the famous "lantai empat". Most foreigners stay on the left of the podium, near the DJ. Many gays are just below and the rest of the dance floor is mostly packed with young people. On the corners, in the dark, dealers, prostitutes and pimps. Older clients usually go downstair in the karaoke room and take ectasy/shabu-shabu with some girls. The crowd is at best on Sundays afternoon I think, because many youngsters who do not have permission to spend the night out clubbing do it during the day.

Great DJs came here, in particular Ame and Luciano, plus some Ibiza DJ such as DJ Pippy. It is currently hosting more and more international DJs, at least once a month or two.

Safety in Stadium:
As with other nightclubs in North Jakarta, most of the clubbers inside Stadium take drugs, in particular ecstasy. Beer is enough for me, but if you decide to take something stronger, you have to know about the potential risks. There are police raids occasionally, but the management of Stadium is usually informed before they occur and they can prevent anybody to deal inside its premises on these days. People can get caught more easily outside the club, and therefore you should be extremely discreet and you should not keep anything on you when you leave the building. The worst thing that could happen to you is having your urine tested, and it happened (see this news article to know more about drugs in Indonesia).

4000 or 5000 people can fit in the whole club, but there is only 1 fire exit, so pray hard and nothing will happen. Pickpockets are another safety issue, with the primary target being cell-phones left in the rear pocket of your pants... you may be high, but others aren't and they are much aware that you are an easy prey..

At last, the taxis located just outside of the club should be avoided at any cost. Walk along Hayam Wuruk for at least 200 meters, then catch a Blue Bird or an Express.

Update July 2009: There were a few people injured and one dead in a fight that took place in Stadium. Apparently, the attack was led by a group of young people in white shirts who wanted to close down the place. In spite of that, I don't think it's unsafe to go there by yourself, the biggest danger you might encounter is being ripped off by a taxi driver.

Made a trip to EMporium Spa located in Jl Pecenongan. I was disappointed. After all the renovations, I thought the spa facilities etc would be upgraded etc. I was again disappointed.

EMporium Spa is under a joint management with Alexis. I arrived there in the late afternoon hoping for a massage but I was told that they have stop providing massage services in the spa. The new EMporium provides only FL services. I made a scanned of the area and the number of girls and the quality was no where near Malioboro. The rate is 650k rupiah for a one hour ST. Sad to say, the stock was of so so standard, 5 and below. I left after 30mins, didn't get the much needed massage and the local FL not stimulating enough for me. The shocking thing was I had to pay a cover charge of 121k rupiahs and there was nothing there for me. For that same price, I would have a more meaningful time in Malioboro.

Btw, the imports at EMporium which some brothers mentioned had all left and returned to Alexis. According to the mami, she said the chinese imports are taken from Alexis.

Brothers thinking of going there, please reconsider. Better to spend your money in Malioboro or Classics.

Here is a bit something on Alexis spa.


Alexis Hotel (Ancol, Jl. R. E. Martadinata No. 1 North Jakarta)
The Hotel Alexis is not really a hotel, it’s more like a bordello. You’ve got a good club downstairs, The Play, with house/progressive music and sexy dancers, and a very select lounge/spa on the seventh floor, the Bathhouse, with girls from countries as far as Uzbekistan, Myanmar or Russia coming to entertain the patrons. Entrance fee for the Bathhouse lounge is Rp. 120,000, and no drinks included. Also a karaoke on the 5th floor (I forgot the name), very nice, with flat screen TV and audio equipment suitable for outdoor concerts. Goddam expensive though, about Rp 3.5 million for 4 people.

In the club the Play, they have a sort of live show with naked girls pretending to have sex, but you can only see the shadow... quite interesting... People call it the Aquarium . Alexis has become one of the most famous party place in Jakarta over the past 2-3 years, along with Stadium. Be sure to check the 7th floor...

There is no place in the world like Jakarta. For those who just got here, either on a business trip or a pleasure one, you might be charmed by its glamor. It is true what many people say about the Big Durian. It is a place where you can literally find everything.

But you have to remain watchful. At times, this city can be unfriendly too, and you surely don’t want to end up being the loser. So, here are some tips for you newcomers to survive in this city:

1. Don’t talk to strangers, really. We were told when we were children that we should not talk to someone we do not know. Well, that advice is very useful in Jakarta. I’m sure you have heard stories of how people are hypnotized and told to take money from the ATM. I’m not a person who believes in black magic, but somehow this proves to be true. So make sure that you keep your eyes wide open and hold your bag like it is the most precious thing that you have while shopping in one of the city’s malls. When someone comes to you and offers some help, simply say, “Get lost, I don’t know you.” You have to keep in mind that people in this city believe that nothing is free. So when someone suddenly becomes nice to you, it only means he or she wants something from you.

2. Jakarta has the worst traffic in the world, so don’t hesitate to drive like a mad person. Things about Jakarta’s traffic that you saw on TV were not fiction. They are real, and the city’s residents face those horrible things every single day. Yes, drivers of cars and motorcycles hate each other, and they will do anything to be able to go faster. Yes, people treat the traffic signs as if they were only accessories to make the city look nicer, so don’t be afraid if you cross the traffic light when it is red. The only way you can survive the traffic is to drive like people in this city, and that is: driving like a bus driver. Make sure no other car or motorcycle overtakes you, if they do, then you have to do whatever it takes to get your spot back. One more thing, you are not obliged to give way to a pedestrian, just keep going.

3. The air is heavily polluted and — trust me — there is nothing beautiful that you can see outside. So you better go to the city’s amazing malls, which are said to be among the best in the world. You will be surprised to find out what these malls have to offer, including the beautiful people hanging out at the expensive cafes and restaurants. Don’t think for a second about visiting the city’s cultural attractions, because they will surely disappoint you.

4. Never use public transportation. You can ride the TransJakarta Busway, but that is as far as you should go. Getting a taxi is the safest way to get around, although it may cost you a fortune. But at least you can sleep for a while until you reach your destination. Some say that the blue taxis are the safest option, but nowadays people also choose the white ones.

5. You don’t need to say “thank you” or other nice things to people. In other cities, it’s common courtesy to say “thank you” when someone does something nice to you. That doesn’t apply in this city. An “OK” might still be acceptable, more than that, it will be considered too much. Remember, don’t smile or say “hello” to random people, they might think you’re crazy.

6. You can do all the bad things that you cannot do in your home town. Don’t feel guilty if you want to treat people badly, since this city is also dubbed the “city of imagination” or “sin city.” Don’t you worry about those hypocrites who are nice, because although they might look like being favored by everybody, the truth is, they are the minority.

7. Lastly, make sure that you bring a lot of money, because in this city money is your passport to happiness. For money, people will do good things to you, including giving you a parking spot in a super-crowded shopping center or letting you relax in a VIP lounge. Money is the only decisive attribute in this city, the only element that makes you valuable as a human being. You can only be called “a good person” if you have money and let others know about it.
