The entertainer Bill Cosby testified 10 years ago that he had obtained Quaaludes in the 1970s to give to young women with whom he wanted to have sex, according to a court document unsealed on Monday.

It was an acknowledgment, the first to become public and in Mr. Cosby’s own words, that he viewed powerful, sedating drugs as a part of his sexual encounters with women.

The disclosure was contained in a court record unsealed by a federal judge in Philadelphia, part of a case brought in 2005 by Andrea Constand, a staff member with the basketball program at Temple University, Mr. Cosby’s alma mater. Ms. Constand accused Mr. Cosby of drugging and molesting her in a case that was later settled.

“When you got the Quaaludes,” asked Dolores M. Troiani, a lawyer for Ms. Constand, “was it in your mind that you were going to use these Quaaludes for young women that you wanted to have sex with?” Mr. Cosby replied, “Yes.”

In the last year, more than two dozen women have come forward to accuse Mr. Cosby of raping or groping them, beginning in the mid-1960s. Some of the women have claimed that he drugged them first. Mr. Cosby and his lawyers have denied the accusations and he has never faced criminal charges.


In the records, Mr. Cosby, now 77, did not admit to drugging the women without their consent. When asked if the women had known they were taking the Quaaludes, Mr. Cosby’s lawyer cut off the questioning.

But Mr. Cosby testified under oath that he had given the sedative to at least one woman and “other people,” according to the document, a memorandum of law filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania that contained excerpts from his 2005 deposition in the Constand case.

The name of the woman Mr. Cosby cites in his testimony is redacted in the paperwork, but the discussion in the court record closely tracks an incident recounted by Therese Serignese, who says she was sexually assaulted by Mr. Cosby in a Las Vegas hotel after one of his performances in 1976.

Joseph Cammarata, a lawyer for Ms. Serignese, said the account in Mr. Cosby’s testimony of the Las Vegas encounter with a woman and Ms. Serignese’s story of her encounter with Mr. Cosby were one and the same. “It’s Therese,” he said. “It’s the same case.”

Ms. Serignese, then 19, has said in interviews that Mr. Cosby gave her pills in a backstage room and that she took them because he was an authority figure and she felt compelled. Her next memory, she said, was of feeling drugged and being sexually assaulted by him without her consent.

In his deposition, Mr. Cosby described the interaction with the unnamed woman this way:

“I meet Ms. [REDACTED] in Las Vegas. She meets me back stage. I give her Quaaludes. We then have sex.”

Mr. Cosby has never directly responded to Ms. Serignese’s account. But last November, after she and other women had come forward, his lawyer, Martin D. Singer, released a statement that said:

“The new, never-before-heard claims from women who have come forward in the past two weeks with unsubstantiated, fantastical stories about things they say occurred 30, 40 or even 50 years ago have escalated far past the point of absurdity.”

Contacted on Tuesday, Ms. Serignese said she could not comment on the disclosure in the court papers because she had filed a defamation suit against Mr. Cosby.

Ms. Constand has not spoken about her case since her suit, and her lawyer, Ms. Troiani, declined to comment on Monday, citing a confidentiality stipulation that she said was part of the 2006 settlement agreement in the case.

Ms. Constand had said in her lawsuit that Mr. Cosby had given her what he described as an herbal medication before, she said, he molested her. In his deposition, Mr. Cosby testified that what he gave her were three half-pills of Benadryl, an allergy medication.
