The remains of a murder victim linked to a controversial qigong master courted by top officials and celebrities were chopped into pieces and dumped in a lake.

DNA tests confirmed the identity of businessman Zou Yong, 46, whose remains were found in Poyang Lake in the eastern province of Jiangxi , The Beijing News reported on Friday, citing police sources.

Zou, a former disciple of qigong master Wang Lin and a delegate to the Jiangxi people’s congress, was reported missing on July 9.

Wang was arrested a week later on suspicion of involvement in the kidnapping and murder of Zou. The pair had fallen out three years ago in a series of commercial disputes. On Tuesday this week, two other men – Liu Feng and Zhu Litong – were arrested and allegedly confessed to kidnapping and murdering Zou.

According to the Beijing News report, Zou had been bundled into a Lexus four-wheel-drive on the afternoon of July 9 when he was on his way to get a foot massage. It was reported that Zou had been followed for days before he was taken by Liu and Zhu.

Police sources said Zou’s body had been chopped up and dumped into the lake and could only be identified with DNA 8evidence.

Both of Zou’s sons gave blood and saliva samples to compare with the DNA found in the body, the newspaper said.

State-run Xinhua reported that another man arrested, Huang Yugang, was also 8implicated.

The newspaper said Zou had once paid 5 million yuan (HK$6.3 million) as “tuition fees” to study with Wang and had given him a luxury vehicle after learning of Wang’s connection with disgraced railways minister Liu Zhijun .

It was reported that Zou had accumulated his share of wealth with construction projects granted by Liu Zhijun.

Zou and Wang fell out in 2013 when Zou accused Wang of handling firearms and illegally practicing medicine.

The Beijing News previously reported that Wang and Zou had sued each other in at least three cases involving several properties in Hong Kong and Shenzhen and the ownership of luxury liquor. It said Wang had written a note saying he would pay 5 million yuan for Zou’s life, and signed the note with his fingerprint.

The report prompted frantic media digging into Wang’s past, which drove him to hide out in Hong Kong, where he has residency.

Wang was accused of a range of crimes including bribery, deception and illegal construction of properties but the charges were brushed away last week by local authorities in Jiangxi %citing inadequate evidence. The Beijing News reported in 2013 that Wang had been jailed in 1979 for seven years for 8deception.

Wang, who once claimed to be a billionaire, attracted a large number of followers and high-profile clients, often opening his five-floor villa and garden to visiting celebrities and journalists.

Qigong masters with “extraordinary” ability have been courted by many of the mainland’s powerful senior officials, businessmen and celebrities since the early 1980s.

Among such masters are Cao Yongzheng , dubbed the “Xinjiang sage”, to whom disgraced security tsar Zhou Yongkang had confided state secrets.

Another is Zhang Baosheng, who found favour with senior officials in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Photos have circulated widely online of Wang posing with former Hong Kong chief executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, former Guangdong political advisory body chairman Zhu Mingguo , Liu Zhijun , actors Jackie Chan and Jet Li, and others.
