An honorable member of the Coffee Shop Has Just Posted the Following:
74-year-old ESM Goh Chok Tong has announced his candidacy this election, which will be held on 11 September 2015.
He appears to be following in the footsteps of a former PM who continued to stand for elections until his eventual death in office.
Mr Goh’s reluctance to step down from politics may be depriving younger members of his party the chance to stand for elections.
What’s more, according to Hansard – which is the name for Parliamentary records – Mr Goh has only spoken once in Parliament since he was re-elected in 2011.
He spoke in a Parliamentary session in February 2013 in support of the 6.9 million Population White Paper. He was one of the 77 PAP MPs who endorsed the paper.
He said at the time, “I applaud the Prime Minister and his team for their courage and leadership in tabling this paper to sketch out the next chapter of the Singapore Story.”
Even though Mr Goh also said that the population figure of 6.9 million is just a planning parameter, do you trust him and his PAP colleagues for not busting the parameter?
