SINGAPORE: Large crowds are expected at the Geylang Serai Hari Raya Bazaar on Jun 4 to Jul 5, especially on weekends, and the police are advising the public to remain vigilant against crime.*

In a news release on Friday (Jun 10), the Singapore Police Force (SPF) suggested that members of the public take precautions by not leaving their valuables unattended in public places, avoiding carrying large amounts of cash and not placing excessive gold jewellery on children.

They also recommended that members of the public avoid being distracted by strangers creating a commotion or "accidentally" bumping or spilling things onto them, avoid placing wallets in their back pocket and to sling handbags in front of their bodies, ensuring that the bags are fastened or zipped at all times.

The police said the public could minimise opportunities for would-be criminals to commit molest by being alert to their surroundings and moving away if someone stands or sits exceptionally close to them. They advised individuals to stay close to friends or move around in groups in crowded places, and if followed, to remain calm and proceed to the nearest open business premise, crowded area or call the police for help.*

In the case of a molestation, the police advised victims to call for help immediately by shouting or to seek help from passersby "to increase the chances of apprehending the culprit", as well as to call "999" as soon as possible.*

Heavy traffic is expected along Changi Road and Sims Avenue during this period, and motorists are advised to avoid the affected roads, make alternative travel arrangements and drive with caution, SPF said.

Auxiliary police officers will be deployed at all affected road junctions to regulate traffic and assist motorists, and "strict enforcement action" will be taken against illegal parking, they added.

The police also reminded the public that it takes a serious view of persons setting off improvised explosive devices constructed using sparklers. “Such improvised explosive devices are a potential fire*hazard,*and causes noise pollution and undue alarm to the public. The blast effect from the explosion can also cause injury to persons and damage to property," the police said.

Offenders may be prosecuted in court for*negligent conduct with respect to any explosive substance. If convicted of either offence, offenders can be jailed up to one year or fined up to S$5,000, or both. If the act leads to anyone getting hurt, offenders may also be liable for voluntarily causing hurt with heated or explosive substances, with a sentence of up to seven years' imprisonment, a fine, caning or any combination of such punishments.*
