Jek Pui Curry Cart

25 Mangkon Rd, Pom Prap, Pom Prap Sattru Phai, Bangkok 10100, Thailand
Corner of Mangkorn and Charoenkrung Roads
Open daily from 3-9pm, with many dishes sold out early
Phone: 08-1854-7110 /+66 2222 5229
MRT Hua Lampong
How to get there: Take MRT (metro) to Hua Lamphong and walk from there. You can also take the Chao Phraya Express Boat to Ratchawong pier. You can take the express boat from Tha Tian pier or Tha Chang pier near the Grand Palace, or from Sathon pier near Silom area.

This streetside curry cart has fans lining up daily, despite having to eat on their laps.

Jek Pui is a rather famous food stall that has been around for more than 50 years, established by the father of the current owner. Jek Pui has been on this corner since day one, so it’s also a rather unique and authentic view of how it was some decades ago. The biggest change is probably to replace the wooden chairs with the red plastic chairs some years ago.

A plate of green curry with homemade fish balls over rice can be an alternative for your kaeng karii, but with a preference for the last. That’s probably also what the people around you eat as well.

Khao Tom Pla Kimpo, Bangkok

1897 Soi Charoen Krung 73
Charoen Krung Road
Wat Phraya Krai
Bang Kho Laem
10120 Bangkok
Tel: 0-2675-2598 & 08-4010-324
Daily Business Hours: 6pm to 12midnight

Place for Boiled Rice Soup with Seafood.

Khao Tom Pla Kimpo (ข้าวต้มปลา กิมโป้), Bangkok, is a dinner and supper place much talked about for its boiled rice soup with seafood. The shop located in Charoen Krung area made an impressive statement, with a whole big fish hanging in front of the eatery.

The small menu work wonders – offering a read of seafood dishes in two styles of preparation: Rice Soup & Spicy Salad. For seafood, the selection features an array of butter fish, red grouper, sea bass, squid, shrimp, and oysters. As for the soup boiled with fish bones and pork, it is fragrant, peppery, and sweet.

The piping hot bowl of rice soup with a variety of seafood and garnishing can be savored on its own, or with the dipping chili sauce, or pickled red chili. The seafood can also be ordered as a salad – with mild spiciness and garnishing of Chinese parsley.

Heng Chun Seng Beef Hotpot

Soi Tha Ruea 7, Sunthon Kosa road, Bangkok 10330
Tel: +66 97 017 7949, +66 2249 2329
Opening Hours: 7am – 8.30pm (Mon – Fri), 7am-4.30pm (Sat, Sun & Public Holidays)
Expected Damage: THB120 – THB160 (approx. S$5.10 – S$6.70) per pax

Legendary Street Thai Beef Hotpot & Noodles In Bangkok.

Thai beef noodles are all about a rich and thick beef broth, with soft beef parts that have been simmering in the soup for hours. If you are a fan of this local delight, you have to pay Heng Chun Seng Beef Hotpot Noodles a visit.

Located on Rama 4 Road, this shop has been around for over 60 years, third generation of beef hotpot masters. The signature dish here is the beef hotpot (it also comes in a pork version). Hungry locals crowd this restaurant throughout its opening hours.

Also, characteristic of good street food places in Thailand, there’s free ice tea too. Absolutely refreshing for Bangkok’s hot weather.

We frequent Heng Chun Seng Beef Hotpot Noodles and we note that it is always crowded. Be prepared to wait for a little, especially at lunch hours.

Psst, we also recommend a food cart that sometimes stops in front of this shop. It sells fried sweet potato, banana, taro and sweet potato balls. These, particularly the sweet potato balls, make a really good after-meal snack. It is only there occasionally, so that will depend on your luck!

Thanee Khao Moo Daeng Roasted & Bbq Pork Rice

Phone: +66 2 278 3987

Wattana Panich (วัฒนาพานิช-ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเนื้อ)

Address: 336-338 Ekkamai Soi 18, Thanon Sukhumvit, Bangkok, Thailand
Phone number: 02-391 7264, 02-392
Open hours: 10 am – 8:30 pm daily
Prices: About 80 – 100 THB for beef noodles, 200 THB for goat noodles

How to get there:
The restaurant is located in the Ekkamai area of Bangkok on Ekkamai Soi 18. It’s a few kilometers from the Ekkamai BTS station, so from the BTS, you can either take a taxi, a bus, or a motorbike to Soi 18 and then look for that yellow and red sign (picture above).

If you are a Thai beef noodle lover, or even if you’re just ready for a beef treat, Wattana Panich (วัฒนาพานิช-ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเนื้อ) is a restaurant you shouldn’t miss when you’re in Bangkok. The beef noodles are wonderful.

Additionally, as if Thai beef noodles couldn’t be outdone, they also offer braised goat noodles. It’s like a goat stew with noodles on the bottom, and it’s outrageously good if you need a good dose of meat.

The only downside I can think of is that the prices are a little on the high side, but I think it’s a combination of the good quality ingredients, and the location, being at Ekkamai – which is a high-end area of Bangkok.

Pad Thai Thip Samai (Pad Thai Pratu Pi) ผัดไทยทิพย์สมัย (ผัดไทยประตูผี)

Address: 313 313 Thanon Mahachai, Phra Nakorn
Hours: 5 pm – 3 am daily
Phone: 022216280

How To Get There
Pad Thai Thip Samai is located in the old district of Phra Nakorn, just a few minutes walk from the Giant Red Swing near Chinatown Bangkok, and very close to the Golden Mountain.

If you go as soon as they open, you can take the Khlong Saen Saep canal boat to the final Panfa Leelard station, exit towards Ratchadamnoen, make a left on Mahachai, and the restaurant will be on your left hand side. Alternatively, you can either take a taxi directly there or a bus. It’s also an easy 5 minute walk from Democracy Monument.

Starting at 5 pm daily, the fires are kindled, and street chefs beginning churning out wok fulls of Pad Thai like crazy.

You’ll hear a continual clickety clack as the metal spatulas clank against the metal rounded woks.

While many people sit down for dinner, even more people order take-away, often in bulk orders.

If you like Pad Thai and are visiting Bangkok, you have no choice but to eat here.

Even if Pad Thai is not your favorite (like me), the experience of watching the chefs make batch after batch of Pad Thai over huge flames is a lot of fun.

Also in the area is a historical coffee shop where they serve great strong brews, but don’t try the food… it’s not so good.

What to Eat: Pad Thai Sen Jan Man Goong (ผัดไทเส้นจันมันกุ้ง) – Pad Thai with prawn head juices, and Pad Thai Haw Kai Goong Sot (ผัดไทห่อไข่กุ้งสด) – Pad Thai wrapped in an egg.

Prices: This restaurant is expensive for Bangkok prices, but it’s in a good location, and very famous, which bumps up the cost. You’ll pay around 70 THB for a plate of Pad Thai here.

Nai Mong Hoy Tod (นายหมงหอยทอด)

Address: 539 Thanon Phlap Phla Chai, Bombrab Sathupai, Bangkok
Open hours: 10:30 am – 9 pm daily
Phone: 08-9773-3133, 02-623-1890
Prices: 70 THB per dish

How to get there:
Nai Mong Hoy Tod (นายหมงหอยทอด) is located just a 5 minute walk from Yaowarat Road, on the more local side, just off Chaoen Krung road. Go down Phlap Phla Chai about 20 meters, and the restaurant is on your right hand side.

Hoy tod (หอยทอด also sometimes spelled hoi tod) is a Thai style oyster or shellfish omelet.

However, it’s often more like a crispy pancake rather than an omelet in my opinion.

The dish is sort of the relative of Pad Thai, and occasionally at restaurants around Thailand you’ll find both dishes served at the same restaurant. However, there are also many restaurants that only specialize in Hoy Tod or Pad Thai. Read more about the Pad Thai / Hoy Tod face-off here.

But anyway, one of the most famous restaurants to eat hoy tod (หอยทอด) in Bangkok is a restaurant known as Nai Mong Hoy Tod (นายหมงหอยทอด, they spell their name Nai Mong Hoi Thod).

You’ll find them in Yaowarat Chinatown, just off Charoen Krung Road, about 20 meters down Phlap Phla Chai street.

It’s just a short distance from the serious street food egg noodle spot, and if you keep walking down Phlap Phla Chai for about 15 minutes you’ll hit the kua gai intersection.

Nai Mong Hoy Tod (นายหมงหอยทอด) is a shophouse style restaurant, and you can choose to either sit inside, or open air on the sidewalk.

I normally prefer to grab a seat outside to take advantage of the street-side atmosphere.

Ba Hao Tian Mi

Open: Monday to Sunday 3:00 PM. - 9:00 PM. (Closed on Wednesday)
Address: 8 Soi Phadung Dao (Texas Suki), Yaowarat Road
Budget: 120-300 baht
Contact: 09 7995 4543, 08 1454 4959

A modern Chinese pudding shop, house number 8 in the heart of Chinatown.
Tian Mi Mi in the song. means love as sweet as honey Ba Hao's Tian Mi refers to the sweetness of real desserts (Tian = sweet, Mi = honey), hence the name implies that it is a dessert shop.

Ba Hao's Pudding, a popular dessert at the first house number 8 in Soi Nana. It is so popular that many people have to make reservations before they can eat. and sparked the birth of the second house number 8, which was especially focused on sweets. They also use ingredients from Yaowarat to create flavor for desserts and drinks.

The restaurant stands out with a circular entrance arch like a Chinese house in the old days. The shop floor is brand new polished stone. The craftsmanship of an old craftsman who specializes in feng shui. The floor is carved into a picture of children running and having fun. which is a technique of carving a terrazzo pattern that is hardly extant in modern times Ba Hao's signature blue terrazzo counter is designed to curve towards the wall. It is both an order counter and a dessert table. There is a high chair to sit and relieve fatigue. Or stand to eat like a bistro is ok.

Yok Zod The Noodle – Serving The Biggest & Juiciest Wanton in Soi

19!Phetchaburi Soi 19 (end of Soi 19, opposite Pratunam Palace Hotel)
Daily: 8am – 6pm
+66 61 551 5561

Yok Zod The Noodle is now my favourite place for wanton noodle fix in Pratunam. If you follow us on Dayre, you would find this post familiar because I mentioned this place in July 2016.

Yok Zod The Noodle is located right at the end of Phetchaburi Soi 19, the same lane as the famous Sab X2. So if you are coming in from GLOW Pratunam, you just have to walk all the way to the back!

They also sell Fishball noodles but I still prefer the wantons here!

If you are observant, you would have noticed that the items shown are all soup based. Soup is actually their specialty here but if you really want to have the dry version, they have it as well.

They also sell Braised Pork Leg here which is also decent. However, for the flavour and texture, I still prefer SabX2.

Yok Zod is the place to go if you are looking for some good wanton noodles in Pratunam because their wantons are big and juicy and it costs just 50 baht!

Talay Tord Saladaeng

Address: Soi Saladaeng Corner, Silom, Bang Rak, Bangkok 10500
Opening Hours: Tue – Fri : 3.30PM – 10PM | Sat – Sun: 11.40AM – 10PM. (Closed on Mondays)

Silom is one of Bangkok’s most popular CBD areas and wildest nightlife districts, so it’s not uncommon to have food stalls situated everywhere along the hood’s footpaths.

We’re taking you to one of the humblest snack stalls in the area that is very popular among the locals – Talay Tord Saladaeng.

Here, you can munch on 3 deep-fried seafood items: crab, shrimp, and squid, that are served with a delicious sweet and sour dipping sauce. The perfect snack to have while walking around town!

If you find yourself strolling along Silom road, make your way to Soi Saladaeng corner and grab yourself a bag of crispy and hearty fried snacks to-go!

Charoen Saeng Silom (ร้านเจริญแสง สีลม)

Address: 492/6 Soi Charoen Krung 49, Bangrak, Bangkok 10500
Open hours: 8 am – 2 pm daily, but don’t come at 2 pm, they will probably be sold old. The best time to come would be the morning at about 10 or 11 am if possible.
Prices: Our total bill for my wife and I and everything we ate came to 309 THB ($8.63)

How to get there: Charoen Saeng Silom (ร้านเจริญแสง สีลม) is located within the alley, right on the corner of Silom Road and Charoen Krung Road, in the Bangrak area of Bangkok. It’s on the opposite side of the intersection from Sirocco and Muslim Restaurant and just within the alley.

Braised pork leg and rice (khao kha moo ข้าวขาหมู) is one of the standard Thai street food dishes.

And typically, it really is a pretty standard tasting and eating dish. It’s available at hundreds of street food corners, kind of like the pork version of chicken rice.

But in Bangkok, one of the ultimate places to eat Thai Chinese braised pork leg and rice is Charoen Saeng Silom (ร้านเจริญแสง สีลม), and it’s one of my favorites in all of Thailand.

Located down a side alley behind the corner of Silom and Charoen Krung Road in Bangrak (near to Silom), but remaining completely hidden from the outside road, is Charoen Saeng Silom (ร้านเจริญแสง สีลม).

It’s the type of restaurant you’d walk past so many times, but if you didn’t know it was down the alley, you’d never know it was there.

It’s also the type of street food restaurant that serves such good food, people come to eat it from all over Bangkok, and it’s not unlikely to find a Mercedes Benz or a luxury car parked in the alley – people come for the good food.

Hidden down an alley side street in downtown Bangkok, Charoen Saeng Silom (ร้านเจริญแสง สีลม) is one of the ultimate places to eat khao kha moo (ข้าวขาหมู) – Thai Chinese braised pork leg and rice.

Their pork leg is unexplainably soft and silky, yet not mushy, and it has a slight sweetness, but well balanced with a blend of Chinese spices and herbs.

If you’re up for a pork feast, I’d recommend ordering the entire leg!

Siang Ki Khao Tom Pla
54 Soi Bamrungrat, Thanon Yaowarat, Bangkok (behind Grand China Hotel)
Tel: +662-224-3600.
Operating hours: 4pm-10pm daily (except last Sunday of each month).

With a century of history under their belt, Siang Ki Khao Tom Pla in Bangkok's Chinatown must be doing something right. And that something is clear rice soup with fresh seafood originally from China.

Unlike jok, the Cantonese porridge cooked by stewing rice until it breaks down, khao tom calls for the rice to be left intact and served in the starchy soup it's cooked in. At Siang Ki, the seafood version has chunks of lightly poached pomfret, a few fresh oysters and optional fish maw, the prized dried fish bladder whose presence is more for texture than taste. A little bateng, cubed pork fried in spices, soy sauce and sugar, finishes the bowl. Seabass and little chewy dried shrimps are also popular here.

It's a comforting, healthy kind of dish. Something best eaten when you're feeling under the weather. And though the hole-in-the-wall joint is nothing to write home about, the food is becoming somewhat of an institution among the Sino-Thai community in Bangkok's Chinatown. Everything is cooked at the front of the shop, the soup simmering away over a Thai charcoal brazier.

It opens from 4pm until 10pm or whenever they sell out which they often do. Come when they are opening and you'll have no choice but to eat inside the tiny shophouse (or takeaway). From 5pm onwards a scattering of street tables are set up along the pavement outside. Try to avoid the peak hours around 8pm when waiting for a table along with hungry locals is normal.

The most basic of soup at Siang Ki with simply fried tofu starts at 30 THB (around US $1.10) and depending on your combination of seafood works its way up to 500 THB (around US $15.30). While that might feel expensive for street food, who wants to eat cheap seafood?

Nai Ek Roll Noodles. Michelin Plate Kway Chap in Yaowarat Bangkok Chinatown

Founder Nai Ek 陳億 came to Bangkok from China in 1960 and began selling kway chap from a push cart stall. Saving enough money from his booming business, Nai Ek moved into his present shop in 1989. His popularity just kept on growing.

Nai Ek’s signiture dish is the rolled noodles in the peppery broth soup. You can choose from a menu different sizes (on the picture above, I choose the smallest option) and also add additional meat. The staff happily recommends different add ons, for example, minced pork and crispy pork.

Nai Ek is a good place to try this traditional Teochew dish from our lean and frugal past. The pork offal etc are fresh and very well cleaned. You will taste only natural porcine sweetness (without the slightest hint of off tastes). The soup tasted mild and well balanced savoury peppery sweet. It is clean tasting and easy to like. For Malaysian / Singaporean kway chap fans, here's a good place to try the Thai version.
