Why am I not surprised? I try very hard not to relate it to the education system, the social culture and all that, but just take a look at what we have been able to achieve? Yes, I don't deny there are a very few successful companies gone abroad, made it big, yes we should be proud of them. Fact is, still there are lots who don't dare to take the risk?

Look at the Suzhou project and you can tell generally the mentality. For those who travelled in China long enough will noticed how the Taiwanese handle it? They basically don't have much support from government, a few pioneers band together, create an industrial park, look for fellow business people who wants to set up operations in China, everything handle by themselves. Of course, on the hindsight, alot failed miserably. I ever heard 1 taiwanese friend told me this story, he was holidaying in Bangkok and was speaking taiwanese hokkien to another friend, suddenly a beggar came up to him and asked if they are from taiwan! Happened that beggar came over to Bangkok to try his luck, luck ran out and became a beggar, don't even have $ to go back Taiwan. That's the risk that they take.

We are a bit extreme, the Taiwanese are probably a bit extreme also. Up to the individual to guage then.

Bro, If a person can afford to be choosy, he must be having a damn good life. What makes their life good? Either their parent or themselves benefited some how from the systems that the country created.
It is like a child born in a rich family, the child can pick and choose their way of life, whether the child is spoiled or not is none of our concern.
I was born from a poor family, if given a choice, I would not mind at all to be born in a family like your "friend"..

i agree with u guys. i oso not born into family like my fren, got the luxury of $$ support while he job hunting. i gotta work 2 jobs while studying in university (that means I work 2 jobs & studying, doing all 3 together at the same time)! everyday sleep average of 3 hours only.

when i was down & out juz b4 i left sillypore, my 2nd job was a waiter / bartender / bouncer (bao ka liao) in a pub.

generally, many sporeans grow up in comfortable environment. when kena hit with problems / harsh environments esp overseas, they are lost!

Think of it, after struggled all these years, from a poor farmer son to a not too bad job in the office. When I looked back, other than I can proudly scold my son everytime he complained for small things that he wanted but failed to get, "knn, complain, you only know how to complain.. nimpei at your age already sell veg in the market in the morning and walked 5 km to the afternoon school!".

Besides claiming that I had and could endure hardship, as self fulfillment, what's wrong with those born natural 天公仔, never really suffered any hardship in his life? Our natural assumption to these lucky people is that "if" one day his good life over, he may suffer more than us because he is not trained or, mentally prepared for that. But what if that day never come? Then what are we preparing and suffering for? I have to admit that some people just born luckier than others.

Bro, I see open liao...so once in a while, while $$$ and time permit, fly south for my 肥婆烧鹅, and my belove Amazon..

Recently I learnt that an ex-colleague is looking for employment in HK but she told me even though the salary is slightly higher than her SG salary, the work stress level is also proportionately higher.

Guess wherever you go, there'll always be work stress and office politics. Sigh...

HK's living standard oso quite high & expensive. HK work environment is similar to spore lah; v stressful & v political. Taiwan oso similar.

In fact, a recent survey on employers / bosses in China, it's said Taiwanese are the most stingy / mean bosses, no 2 is HK, no 3 is sillypore bosses.

Very true that HKG is alot higher in terms of living expenses standards, be it on public transportations, food, accomodations, etc. It's the mere basic essentials in HKG that kills!

A 30mins taxi ride from Lan Kwau Fong downtown to Tsui Lam, easily costs as much as HKG$ 300+ (SGD$60)....one way! Imagine how far we can ride to back home or in Shanghai......

I was once in HKG, with another fellow bro from SBFon a private trip...we changed about HKGD$ 2,000 cash as spending monies on hand, and before we know, it was all spent in a blink of eye! Not that we both were spending it at high-end places but rather we were only having meals at a normal HKG "Cha Chan Teng" (kopi-tiam), having beer at a mere HKD$35 each yet by end of the night, the monies was all gone after reaching back hotel, taking the taxi.....sigh....

Housing is just as exorbitantly high to! A mere 800sft apartment costs in central HKG area as high as HKD$20,000 (SGD$4,000)!!!

End of the day, be it in HKG or back home in SGP, whatever one earns, by the end of the month all goes to basic essentials only. It might sound alot in terms of HKD$ as compared to SDG$ on wages yet when the actual calculations adds up, it comes back to square one!

After being here in Shanghai for coming 5 years+, I have learnt very much that only earning in foreign currencies, whilst spending it in China would be the only best choice to be in and position to be in!

My RMB cent worth of opinion here to all.....cheerios
