Re: Massage parlours in Bkk
Sorry if this seem to be not as relevant. However, since i'm going to bkk next week, i would like to check out something..
i remember clearly during my last trip to bkk, i tried to go to some places.. yet when i take a taxi, the bloody taxi drivers drove us to where he wants to us to go(bloody hell, most likely he gets tips).. i mean it's like if the namecard was shown to the taxi drivers, they would see that if it's restaurants, then they would drive u to some food places and say good food there.. this happens for food places and also massage places.. wtf.. bastards man.. can i ask the experienced brothers here, how do we prevent such idiotic taxis drivers from doing such shitty stuff? and also, this time, it would be me alone.. would it be very dangerous to go to the "chiong" places? Pls advise.. thx.. Sorry yet again.. pls don't spam me if u feel this posting is out.. |

I oso heard of cases (from pple I know, but are ladies, some are carrying babies/kids, so likely the drivers take advantage of the situation) in SG, where local SGPeans take taxi, the taxi driver detour round half of SG 2 go 2 the destination! Eg, from Hougang 2 Changi Airport, the driver went 2 SLE, then take KJE, then took PIE 2 Changi Airport!!! They quarrelled wif the driver on the way, but since they're on the highway, there's nothing much the passenger can do (unless u wanna get off on the highway, & if the driver wanna drop u off)! In Thailand, most of the pple are v friendly & honest, including the taxi drivers. But then there are black sheeps. Similarly, there are black sheeps in other countries. I'd oso encountered in BKK, when I took a taxi wif my Korean gf, we both cant speak Thai, English is the only common language. We wanted 2 go 4 dinner (western food), but still deciding which restaurant (in the vicinity of our destination), then the taxi driver tried 2 recommend us 2 go some seafood restaurant. We declined, but he was getting persuasive, so my gf juz lied tat we are meeting some other pple in tat area. Or, do u physically look like easily intimidated? Looking 2 civilised / cultured / gentleman, other pple may feel u are easily intimidated & try 2 take advantage. If u are not familiar wif BKK, I believe u'll be staying in town. Most of the cheong places are in town, there's oso plenty of restaurants of many cuisines in town. Get a map from the hotel, can oso combine wif maps of subway (BTS & MRT) networks, u should roughly have some idea of the direction. If not, ask the hotel staff. Dun have 2 be shy like in SG, where if u openly tell pple / strangers, especially females, tat u go cheong, u'll be frowned / looked down upon. The Thais are generally more receptive. Workers in the hospitality / service industry encountered plenty of such guests. U can see, how the non-Thai speaking ang mohs are not as shy 2 ask around, they managed 2 get their way around happily!

very important that when u get on the cab,u hv to ask the driver whether he want to take u to the place that u decided to go or not. i did come across , couple of times when i get on the cab to go to a certain place, the driver will requested for a flat rate price instead of running the meter.its up to u whether u wanna agree or not.get off aand get on the next one if u do not agree.taxi is everywhere in bkk.normally the price they quote are quite close to the whole trip meter price....maybe 10-30 baht extra. its always good to learn a bit of that country langauge so as to tell the locals indirectly that you are a regular in their country and therefore is not a "shuer yee". |

Re: Massage parlours in Bkk
encountered one such driver once during my 1st time in bangkok few years back.
Asked if he is gonna have the meter on, and got in after he nodded, but after the doors closed he yabbled on saying his meter is spoilt, cant on, and quoted me 200 for a trip from asoke to petburi soi1 ! told him "up to u, meter no on, me no pay" and after a few tries "explaining" to me why the meter was spoilt, the meter miraculously recovered!! however i gave him a round change (fare was 72+ thb, i gave him 90) upon arrival, afterall, his trick didnt work but while in thailand, give them some face and both goes off happy. my say is, when the thai drivers pulls a stunt on you, while you have to be firm on ur stand however, but do not bring out any aggression... afterall you're in a foreign land and thais rather have thier face saved den to have any sorta confrontation. Re: Massage parlours in Bkk
I was in Batam. We encountered a worst taxi driver.
We were on our way to the ferry terminal and we refused to board a few taxi who quoted above 70k ruppiah. Finally 1 taxi driver said ok. Guess what stunt he pulled up with? After travelling for awhile under the hot sun he said that 70k does not comes with aircon. If u want aircon, it's 90k. As it was so hot and we were rushing for time we just paid and slammed his door when we alighted... In BKK airport also met a taxi driver who quoted extra 100 baht after we're in the highway. Told him meter but he was cunning...

sigh.. maybe u're right as in unlucky.. but from what i know, only abt 10% of the taxis in thailand can be trusted. well, u and ur gf was persuaded before u start the journey.. guess i so much more unlucky as in the bastard driver say ok to whatever and wherever.. but instead drove to where he wanted to recomend and stopped there.. well, this is the worse case.. because u're at their "turf".. u do not know where u are, yet they keep saying here is good and doesn't want to move. see the difference in the bastards we met?? sigh.. the thing is how to handle such situation?? if don't pay the driver, there is a high chance of danger. somemore, it is totally unknown of the actual venue hence it seems quite difficult to even get out of there.. shitty right?? sigh.. maybe must be like brother vmtech, but instead of meter, must tell the driver that if no reach means no pay.. however, if this case still happens, how to handle?? sorry abt this.. cos going bkk next week yet i think i have a phobia within to take taxis which cannot be trusted.. As for the trains, i think they operate till quite early right? |

When I 1st came to BKK, I got several maps from the hotel; map of the city, map of the subway network, map of several places of interests, etc etc. I studied the map quite diligently. The must-know place is where I am staying, ie, the hotel location, & then what's around the vicinity, the places I may need to go or likely to go, places of my "interests", etc etc. And then, when on the streets, try 2 know which direction u are in, ie, north / south / east / west, etc etc, that will help u orient around. At least, u'll know yr destination is in the north/south/east/west, & then u should go straight/left/right, etc etc. From yr thots & reaction, it juz shows u are pretty kiasi, ie, quite worried about several things, afraid of several things. Many "experienced pple" may even be able to tell that from yr face/body language, & then the not-so-honest ones may even scheme against u!!! Me & my gf oredi told the taxi driver the destination, ie, the name of the road & soi number, upon getting on the cab. It's on the journey, that we both are discussing (in English) about wat cuisine / which restaurant to go for dinner, then the taxi driver cut-in & interrupted us to recommend some restaurants in other places, saying he knows the captain / manager of those restaurants. How to handle yr situation? As I said, use yr street smartness / initiative! Yes, he brought u to a place not yr destination at all, not moving at all. After u paid the fare & get off the taxi, what's there from stopping u to get another taxi along the street? If u are going to a Massage Parlor, most, if not all, are in town, & there's plenty of taxis in BKK town area! U don't even need to go or step into the Massage Parlor, wherever he brought u to, unless he's forcing u with a knife or gun! With the next taxi driver, when u show him the business card of the MP, he's likely to think u are MP hopping (looking around, may not really patronise), or even knows u were taken 2 the wrong destination by the previous driver. But at least it shows that u are firm about going to the right destination (the right MP). Yes, it's wasting yr time + taxi fare, but u are in a foreign country, u cant speak their language nor know yr destination / direction, & u wanna be safely in 1 good piece, so do u think my idea is suitable? The taxi gets paid the fare by the meter, u hail another cab & get 2 the destination in 1 good piece, & everything else goes on. I'll advise against trying the technique of vmtech. His case is quite different from yrs. His driver kinda didnt wanna turn on the meter (when he initially said yes), while yrs turned on the meter but took u 2 a different destination. Yr driver can say u told him go to an establishment tat provide the same / similar service as tat on the business card & etc etc (can give all sorts of excuses). Depending on individual's temper, if u try vmtech's technique, he might think u are not being honest or try to short-change him, etc etc, it might even lead yr taxi driver into aggression! My ang moh colleagues here oso encountered unexpected situations, they use the technique I mentioned. Some of the cases they met are, taxi drivers don't know where is Sukhumvit Road (all my ang moh colleagues stay in sukhumvit)??? Some of the taxi drivers kinda totally dun understand wat the ang mohs are talking about, their destination, etc. They juz simply get off the taxi & hail another one. Then their encounter simply became a lunch-time joke / comment (esp the driver tat doesn't know Sukhumvit Road), that the driver probably was riding on a buffalo in the farm the day b4, and they juz came to BKK to drive taxi! In general, the taxi drivers in BKK / Thailand are not that bad. My ang moh colleagues oso said the same. They are pretty happy wif the taxis here. Though many of the drivers, their English proficiency is not very good, but they can feel that the drivers are honest & trying hard 2 understand the passengers. They even commented the drivers are polite & friendly!!! A few unpleasant encounters are merely a handful of black sheeps. If the driver doesnt wanna travel by meter, when u get on the taxi & told him yr destination, he'll quote u a flat price / try 2 bargain. So, u dun even need 2 tell him u wanna travel by meter! For me, normally, I'll get off the taxi, unless the price quoted is similar to the estimated meter fare (that's provided u know). I even encountered 1 taxi, which I describe as "mental" case. I was going from Rachada to near Ekkamai. After over-taking & cutting in front of another car in slow traffic, he kept smiling / laughing. Then suddenly, he made a u-turn & went on the highway/flyover going 2 a different (Pratunam) direction. At 1st, I thot he was trying 2 avoid some traffic jam & take alternative route, which I'll be happy, even if it meant a detour. But I start 2 pay more attention. Then he reset the meter on the highway, & I got puzzled but abit glad. When he passed the exit/turn tat could go to my destination, I reminded him, & he told me tat way oso can go. Then his mobile phone rang, he picked up & spoke abit. When on the phone, he seem normal. Then when he almost reach Pratunam area, he u-turned again (2 go Ekkamai direction) 2 remain on the highway, & then reset the meter. But, somehow, at an intersection, he u-turned again to go back to Pratunam direction. I started 2 get impatient (oso abit worried, cos he was laughing by himself every now & then) & told him I'm going to Ekkamai direction, which is totally opposite of where he is heading now. He juz said ok, & then u-turned at the next u-turn, & reset the meter again! This time round, he finally took me to my destination, but we spent 45 mins w/o traffic jam in the nite, when it'll normally take about 20 mins w/o traffic jam! The metered fare is reasonable, ard 60+ THB. Throughout the journey, he was laughing by himself every now & then (bursts of laugh, then stop). What do u think of this type of case?

Re: Massage parlours in Bkk
Especially for massage parlours in ratchada area i think stick to BTS or MRT better, since so many maps can tell u in detail how to get to poseidon, nataree, colonze, emmanuele and so on by train. If die die need to go to new petchburi road then i think need to take cab cos i dunno how on earth to get there by other means. Strangely i never took a cab to a massage parlour, maybe cos i always go ratchada and cos of the great info from generous information providers here and the detailed maps in sites like bangkok tonight. My advice is take a train especially when going to MPs cos this will guarantee u that u dont pay commision for drivers(some places only practice this crap) as well as u go where u really want to go.
