Major fire at Fortune hotel and spa in Central Jakarta brings out 16 fire trucks

Fortune hotel and spa, located on Jalan KH Mas Mansyur in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, caught on fire at around 8:30 am today.

Reports say that at least 16 fire trucks have been dispatched to put out the fire. The cause of the fire, and whether there are any casualties, is not yet known.

The hotel is one of several Fortune outlet across the city, all well-known for the “extra” services they offer their customers.

The resulting smoke from the fire could be seen from various locations in Central Jakarta this morning.

Most likely some guy was smoking in the rooms and fell asleep smoking while his massage girl was out of the room for few minutes. Caught the place on fire and burned it down.

Only China has a higher percentage of smokers than Indonesia. They love to fill their lungs with smoke.

If the girls didn't negotiate up front, the sex tourists would either not pay them anything or give them less than the going rate. I still remember the surprise in the voice of a couple of girls I had been with many times. They called me in the morning on my cell phone back in the early 2000's telling me that they were at a hotel next to my apartment with a guy who took the both of them the night before, and they couldn't believe he was only giving them 75k each. They didn't speak English, so they wanted me to explain to the guy that was too little. They put the guy on the phone with me and I told him the girls don't negotiate price in Jakarta because they just trust us guys to give them the going rate - and 75k each was too little. He told me he'd been visiting Bangkok and Manila for years and he knew the game. He said since they didn't negotiate up front, they will get what he gives them.

It seems this started happening frequently with many of the girls around that time. So the girls started negotiating up front.

Along with those guys who paid too little, there was also an influx of guys who would overpay. So that caused the prices to go up.

The innocence, charm, and feeling of GFE related to not negotiating up front, then giving a set price for "taxi money" in the morning that was fair and reasonable were gone. That has been replaced with "How much you gonna pay me?" and "you want short time or long time"?


As far as the brothels, Malioboro used to have girls for 350k, but they have gotten rid of them and only have the expensive girls now. King Cross used to be 350k until recently and now they are about double that - for the same exact girls.

Honestly, it's too late to make Jakarta a secret again as there are many sites now talking about it in detail. But to wish for Jakarta to stay pristine and then post about it publicly is a contradiction.

every market got good and bad customers. Even if u blame the bad lemons, end up there will still be other bad lemons to spoil the market. Its only a matter of time before it happens.

Prices across all of Asia's cheaper markets have gone up, why single out Jakarta? Have you been to Classic late on a Saturday night? When the forces above get greedier, and want more "tea money" in order to keep a blind eye to the sinful and hedonistic activities taking place in the largest Muslim country in the world, who pays for that? We do, through the increased prices imposed by the clubs, bars, and hotels.

When a new Police or government regime comes into play, saying they want to 'clean up' everything, would you think they'd accept the same as the last regime to let things "go on as usual"? I suspect failure to do this results in some of these places being temporarily "closed", investigated, or not being allowed to parade fully bare women for short periods, which we see all to often.

Sure, some internet forum advertising has led to a few 'spoiling the market' particularly at BATs/CJs where the demographic is foreign businessmen with cash to burn. But also look at how BlokM, which is also targeted to foreigners, which has turned from a bustling vibrant red-light district into something that now feels dead, in spite of it's internet 'infamy'.

So, it would be very naive to think that simply mentioning a place online is going result in drastic price increases. There are way more factors in play that i am not equipped to discuss. Besides, in North Jakarta, foreign punters make probably less than 5% of the total demographic. I really doubt these places are stupid enough to risk alienating the 95% local clientele, by raising prices to capture more profits of the 5% foreigners. At least we don't see 'foreigner' surcharge here like in Japan or other countries, but in a way that surcharge does apply to CJs

How true. I started going to Jakarta in 2005 as my office shifted from Bangkok to Jakarta & it was heaven. I remember getting real FLs through my PA & they only cost 500K for overnight for a University student & good looking. I'm sad that the prices has all gone to hell & back & it's no longer attractive for a cheongster like me
