Get those thugs, says Cabinet

KUALA LUMPUR: The Cabinet has ordered the police to come down hard on criminals in Johor Baru and take three urgent steps to clean up the city’s image as a crime-ridden place.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who chaired the Cabinet meeting yesterday, said the most urgent directive ordered was for a higher police presence in the city’s streets, with 400 additional police personnel to be sent in immediately.

The other steps are three temporary new district police headquarters at Seri Alam, Nusa Jaya and Kulai.

Najib said the Government had approved RM6mil for leasing existing shophouses for the purpose.

“They do not have to wait for permanent buildings to be built. They can take immediate steps to set up district police stations by renting shophouses as an interim measure,” he said.

Najib said approval had also been given for the use of 200 Proton cars for patrolling. These vehicles would come with trained drivers.

“With these immediate steps, we hope to allay concerns and increase public confidence,” he said after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Bank Negara’s Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency at the Defence Ministry.

IGP Tan Sri Musa Hassan said 300 police personnel from the General Operations Force (GOF) and another 100 from the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) would be sent to patrol the streets of Johor Baru over the next few days.

“These 400 policemen will help those presently doing crime prevention rounds.

“They will be in Johor until 400 new officers and men passing out from the academy are sent to the state,” he said, adding that 11 new police stations would also be set up soon.

On the crime rate in Johor, the IGP said police had managed to bring it down by more than 7.5 % or about 1,000 cases over the first five months of the year compared with the corresponding period last year.

The Cabinet discussed the rising crime rate in the country and the recent cases in Johor after the issue was raised by the MCA yesterday.

Party president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting said MCA vice-president and Johor MCA chief Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek had briefed the Cabinet on the meetings he had held with the police officers and representatives from associations in Johor Baru.

“The government is paying serious attention to crime and has directed the relevant authorities to speed up the process of upgrading facilities and equipment,” said Ong, who is also Housing and Local Government Minister.

Dr Chua said approvals for more personnel, patrol cars and temporary usage of shop houses, as police stations were “a good sign.”

“The public will welcome the measures,” he added.

Very heartening news.

But it raises certain questions:-

1. How immediately is imediately? Is this another promise to stall for time as usual with red tape pussyfooting?

2. And while the paperwork and processing needs to be done, what are the measures the security force will ensure public saftety? Surely not tell the citizens to hide behind their doors and shutters till the so call 'promises' materialise?

3. If the security forces can apprehend suspects and put them in jail within one day after one public outcry, why are the other perpetrators of crime still not caught and why not long before? Is there inefficiency in that organisation and who is responsible?

4. What about the organisation itself? There were reports of rogue cops and cowards within the force who flee instead of helping the citizens whom they had sworn to protect. Who are they and what are the actions being done to them? Why are they not named and shamed publically so as a deterrent to the other officers who may be comtemplating further detrimental actions to their oath?

5. What are the steps and measures to ensure the safety of the other officers for they are human too? For example, increase in patrol as well as manpower teams and firepower, body vests,eg, what are the concrete steps? Who is responsible to look into it if the previous commander failed to do his job, providing excuses for sworn officers to give.

6. Which is the co-ordinating dept to handle civilian intelligence so that civilians with info may tip off the correct dept and not to lazy, sleepy or corrupt elements within the force?

7. What was the root cause for the spike in crime ( enough of blaming others, such as foriegners, or poverty or whatever non researched excuses ), who was responsible for it and why was it not monitored and prevented before until there were so many victims? And what are the actions will be taken to ensure such spikes will not occur again?

These and many other questions need to be answered as ordinary trusting civilians - not only chinese but malays and indians as well - goes on living in fear. Criminals will seek to divide and conquer, they have no loyalty, pledges no allegience to any known higher being, broken every single law laid out by both a higher being and men, for ill gotten gains rules their mind only, so its a matter of time before they act on other communities as well. It is not enough to just petition. Questions need to be answered and acted upon.

Many victims had been sacrificed to show up the inefficiencies of the various dept sworn to protect and help the citizens. Dont let their sacrifices be in vain. Don't give up or let up to silly assurances, otherwise nothing will change and anarchy will rule.

Me nber go JB 4 more then 10yrs. Last i went was waiting for a Malaysian friend at crossway. We r smoking but we noe the golden rule never throw the cigarette butt on the floor. Notice a mud in blue staring at us and i warn my friend make sure butt dun drop on floor when dispose in the bin.

He insisted and ask for RM50 else go police station with him. Manage to discount to RM30 for settlement. (NNKC think back majiam like barganing for HJ in TN lidat).

Hey bro, thats not something right to say. You can't raise these kind of racial issues, especially in singapore. You could get into trouble for it when someone feels offended by that remark.
