Book reveals how sex trade is changing, with services aimed at the young, rich and gay By Devi Asmarani AT SOME private parties, beautiful girls strut around stark naked. 'Sex is the most basic need of a human being, and when it comes to sex in Indonesia, there is no recession,' says Mr Moammar Emka, one of the authors of the best-selling Jakarta Undercover: Sex And The City. The journalist, who spent six years researching the underground sex scene, says he found so much happening that he plans to launch a sequel next week. Indonesia's sex industry pulls in US$3.3 billion (S$5.7 billion) annually, 2 per cent of the country's gross domestic product, according to the International Labour Organisation. In Jakarta, much of the action is at usual venues such as discos, casinos, karaoke bars and 'massage-plus' parlours in Chinatown. But new services are now emerging to serve a niche market: The city's young and rich. Beauty salons offer sex services on top of herbal skin treatments. Car rental companies provide modified luxury SUVs complete with a driver and a female (or two) companions. Private rooms in karaoke bars include optional erotic dancers. Special event organisers, known as 'EOs', are raking in money by setting up private sex parties for rich Jakarta dwellers. They provide women - or men - as well as the venue. Only members are welcome at these events, which are reminiscent of scenes in Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut. In some cases, deposits of up to 50 million rupiah (S$10,100) are required to join the circle, and several millions of rupiah more to attend an event. Many EOs have moved up from the ordinary night entertainment businesses. Some also supply 'high-class' women, including aspiring models or established actresses, to clients who include government officials, politicians and businessmen. Mr Herry, a former EO, told The Sunday Times: 'I did everything, from arranging meetings between my clients and the girls, to sometimes even accompanying the women to shop with money given by the clients. 'An aspiring model costs about 5 million rupiah a night, the more famous ones, up to 25 million.' Even ordinary sex workers make good money. Dewi, 24, says she earns at least 1.5 million rupiah a week working at a club in Chinatown. She got into the business with the help of an erotic dancer she met at a bus terminal when she first arrived in Jakarta. 'I never wanted to get into this, but I have a daughter and a family to take care of,' the widow told The Sunday Times. Another growing market are Indonesia's gays, who have been coming out of the closet. Gay bars were unknown three years ago, says Mr Yuda, 33, who is gay. But now, many publicly cater to gays at least one night of the week, some featuring male go-go dancers, he says. 'The popular culture is more accommodating to gay people these days, causing the community to grow rapidly,' he says. Sociologist Dede Utomo, a gay activist, says Indonesia is becoming a more open society, following the end of three decades of rule by president Suharto. Ironically, there has also been a simultaneous growth of religious conservatism. The shifting values have also led to a general increase in premarital sex, recent studies show. Mr Utomo says: 'Books like Jakarta Undercover show that we have been living in a kind of Victorian moral climate, where we present ourselves as wholesome while deep down, we are really naughty by nature.' Such revelations make some people nervous. Mrs Anastasia Siahaan, 42, says: 'I had to put the book down several times because I kept imagining my husband doing it.'
