Worried Singaporeans give Malaysian holiday plans a miss

Worried Singaporeans give Malaysian holiday plans a miss

Singaporeans, alarmed at the recent spate of shooting cases all around Malaysia, have gone on to alter their travel plans, with some postponing their trips, fearing for their lives.

In the past fornight, at least 13 such incidents were reported, including the high-profile case of Arab-Malaysian Development Bank founder Hussain Ahmad Najadi, who was gunned down on July 29 at a carpark in Kuala Lumpur.

Today Online reported that Singaporean Lim Jiuan, 53, cancelled her trip to Malaysia following the shooting incidents. She and her family had planned to spend the long Hari Raya weekend at the Berjaya Hills resort near Genting Highlands.

“In the past week, there have been many cases of violence, so we decided not to go, and to remain in Singapore,” she said.

A group of eight friends, including 32-year-old businessman Roy Soh, changed their plans of driving up to Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday night. They left on Thursday morning instead.

“We wanted to beat the traffic jams, but a few of us were quite worried about safety issues driving through the night. We felt that it’s better to take breaks at rest-stops during the day, rather than at night.”

Singaporeans who were already holidaying in Malaysia were also concerned about their safety, the online portal reported.

Lynette Wong, 26, who is in Kuala Lumpur, said she and her 11 friends continued with their holiday plans even though their parents had advised them against it, as they were in need of a break.

She, however, said the capital city "looks as per normal so far". But she noted that the three shooting cases in Penang two days ago was a cause for concern, adding that the group will stay together and not attract unnecessary attention to themselves.

Despite the concerns, many Singaporeans continued with their travel into Malaysia - as seen by the massive traffic jams which started on Wednesday night and went on until Thursday afternoon - showing that the recent cases were targeted attacks.

As part of their annual Hari Raya ritual, Salamon Sungip, 58, and his family left for Batu Pahat yesterday, pointing out that “killings happen everywhere, so no difference”.

Ilyas Selamat - a 26-year-old engineer - said he continued to drive into Johor Baru to fill up on petrol twice a week as the shootings “do not involve regular civilians”.

Singaporeans play it safe amid spate of crime in Malaysia

Singaporeans play it safe amid spate of crime in Malaysia

A recent spate of violent crimes in Malaysia has not put Singaporeans off going there. However, many are playing it safe, The Straits Times has found.

At least 24 people have been killed and 21 injured since April in shootings and robberies in areas including Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Perak, Johor and Negeri Sembilan.

Miss Candice Lim, a management trainee based in Kuala Lumpur, never leaves her house without a pepper spray.

She also uses the MyTeksi application on her phone to book taxis, which allows her friends and family to track her ride.

Safety travel tips for Malaysia
•Don't walk around alone. Always try to be accompanied.
•Don't carry handbags or cash with you unless necessary.
•Carry any bags in front of you and cover them. Do not sling them on the side.
•Be alert of your surroundings and look out for suspicious people.
•Lock car doors whenever possible, even when pumping petrol.
•Don't change a large sum of money and count it in public. Change money in Singapore if possible.

70 foreign women detained in raid at ZON, JB

Report from The New Straits Times dated 6 September 2013 :-

70 foreign women detained in raid at ZON, JB

JOHOR BARU: The Johor Immigration Department arrested 70 foreign women at an entertainment outlet in Stulang Laut on Wednesday.

In the operation at 10.30pm, code-named Op Sepadu, the women who had entered the country on tourist visas were detained for violating their social visit passes by working as guest relation officers.

Aged between 22 and 35, the women, mostly wearing low-cut dresses and revealing body-hugging blouses, were caught while busy entertaining their guests.

They did not realise the enforcement officers' presence until the lights were switched on.

Some attempted to flee, but failed to do so as enforcement officers had secured all exit points.

Some even tried to sweet talk their way to freedom by enticing the officers with all kinds of offers, but these were not entertained.

State Immigration enforcement unit deputy chief Masri Abdul said the raid followed complaints by members of the public about the presence of foreign women in large numbers.

Out of the 70 detained, 62 were Vietnamese, seven were from China and one a South Korean.

The women have been sent to the Pekan Nenas Detention Centre in Pontian to facilitate investigations under Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. They may be fined RM1,000 or face an imprisonment term of six months or both.

End to illegal parking at CIQ, JB

Report from The New Straits Times dated 11 September 2013 :-

End to illegal parking at CIQ, JB

INCONSIDERATE: Authorities are taking action against drivers who park their vehicles illegally along the road and at the roundabout JOHOR BAHRU:

GONE are the days where errant motorists can continue to park their vehicles haphazardly along the road heading to the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex here.

Last weekend, enforcement authorities took action by issuing summonses after numerous complaints from the public. The complex, popularly known as CIQ, went into operation on Dec 16, 2008.

Even though there is ample parking space, those who work in Singapore and some working in the complex often parked their vehicles illegally along the road and at the roundabout nearby. Their inconsiderate action posed numerous problems and inconveniences to other motorists. It causes a traffic jam and is an eyesore at the complex.

Some motorists also parked their vehicles on the grass embankment. Checks revealed that most of them who parked illegally there had driven to the complex, left their vehicles by the road side and hopped on a bus to get to work in Singapore. They only returned home late in the evening.

They do not drive into Singapore because of the S$10 (about RM25) charge per vehicle per entry, after the 10-day free entry per annum on the Autopass Card expires.

Foreign vehicles entering the republic are required to buy an Autopass Card from the Land Transport Authority.

However, each vehicle is given 10-day free entry a year. The card is a customised stored-value card issued to foreign-registered vehicles that serves as an electronic vehicle entry permit.

To avoid such charges, motorists opt for the easy way out. However, the vehicles parked by the roadside, around sharp bends and near the roundabout often blocked motorists' view of oncoming vehicles.

It also narrows down the road, making it a tight squeeze to get to the complex.

Despite numerous complaints to the police and enforcement authorities for many years, the errant motorists had got away scot-free.

However, on Saturday, the Johor Baru City council despatched their enforcement officers to the scene. Motorist Salim Alim, 46, said he was thankful that the authorities are finally taking action. Salim, who frequents CIQ to send and pick up his daughter who is attending a course in Singapore, said the authorities should also take action against those who smoke at areas where signboards are erected to warn them against it.

"CIQ is a building named after a respectful man -- the late Sultan of Johor Sultan Iskandar Sultan Ismail, who had done so much for the state, thus it is paramount that everything is done to ensure a building named after him is well taken care of.

"The authorities should buck up and ensure that law and order is always maintained here," he said. Another motorist, Angela Ummi Kalsom Hassan, 37, said she had problems negotiating the roundabout towards the CIQ as there were vehicles parked there. The procurement manager from a private international college here in Johor Baru said that it was important that action is taken against the motorists, as CIQ is one of the entry points into the country.

"Foreigners making their way in may get the impression that Johoreans do not respect the rules by parking their vehicles haphazardly and dangerously," she added.

Wishing all a nice weekend. Cheers.

Firefly connects JB and Pekanbaru. Indonesia

Report from The New Straits Times dated 3 October 2013 :-

Firefly connects JB and Pekanbaru, Indonesia

FAMILIARISATION TRIP: Members of the media were invited to experience the capital of Indonesia’s Riau province

PEKANBARU: MEMBERS of the media were recently taken on a three-day, two-night trip to Pekanbaru in Riau province, Indonesia, to experience Firefly’s Everyday Low Fare Johor Baru-Pekanbaru route.

The 21-member group, led by Johor Media Club president Fauzi Isa, comprised journalists, photographers, broadcasters and representatives from the Johor Menteri Besar’s Media Communication (Medkom) Unit.

“The Johor Media Club was elected to be promotion partners by the state government and Tourism Department. Thus, we were invited to promote Johor and learn about Pekanbaru,” said Fauzi.

The trip was organised with the cooperation of Firefly, the state government and the Johor Tourism Department.
Firefly Johor sales manager Khairul Anuar Daud said the airline decided to sponsor the air tickets to Pekanbaru for the media members who were the “best people to experience and report their findings”.

He said the objective of this promotion was to learn from the media representatives “our strengths and weaknesses”.

Firefly’s Johor Baru-Pekanbaru route allows passengers to experience the Firefly travel experience that aims to provide seamless, hassle-free regional connectivity.

The departure was from the Sultan Ismail International Airport in Senai.

After checking in their luggage, the media delegation visited Firefly’s office, before boarding their ATR 72-500 turboprop aircraft which has a seating capacity of 72.

The 80-minute journey went smoothly, and the delegates arrived without encountering any glitches at Pekanbaru’s Sultan Syarif Kasim II International Airport.

The airport recently underwent intensive renovation costing more than RM14.2 million to cater to the growing number of passengers. Last year, the airport could cater up to four million passengers and today, it could be double that number.

The airport’s operation service manager, Hastroman Yusof, said the airport tarmac was used by 90 commercial flights on a daily basis.

The delegates then made their way to Pekanbaru’s Governor’s Office in Jalan Jendral Sudirman, where an office complex housing all the official government departments was also located. This one-stop centre enables the city’s 1.1 million population to settle all government-related matters under one roof.

When Firefly’s Indonesian representative Sri Noviyanti Oppie shared this information, many members of the delegation were impressed.

Travelling in a mini bus, the delegates were then taken around to see several iconic structures in the city, including the Tugu Tarian Zapin.

Upon seeing this monument which depicted two men and a woman engaged in the dance form popular in Johor, members of the delega-
tion mentioned this to their Indonesian counterparts.

The visitors were later taken to the Sang Nila Utama Museum, which housed Pekanbaru’s collection of artefacts related to the Riau-Malay heritage. There were Malay wedding costumes, traditional toys, musical instruments and replicas of oil rigs and methods of extracting Pekanbaru’s rich oil reserves.

Said told the Johor Media Club members that Riau Province’s economy depended heavily on oil.

Other attractions included in the trip were visits to the Gedung Taman Budaya Riau or its Cultural Park, the Pekanbaru Expo, the famous Pasar Pusat, Pasar Bawah and Pasar Tengah, the Grand Mosque that is the oldest mosque the province, and the Labersa Grand Hotel with its beautiful golf course.

The Pasar Pusat is a market famous for household items like ceramics, leather products and carpets, clothing and shoes. The Pasar Bawah (basement) and Pasar Tengah (middle), refer to a three-storey market that is a haven for shoppers looking for a good bargains.

Meals included local delicacies like the nasi Padang.

Fauzi said the highlight of the trip, among others, was the briefing by the Riau Province Culture and Tourism department chief H. Said Syarifuddin, who said that the administration was divided into nine regencies, namely Bengkalis, Indragiri Hilir, Kampar, Kuantan Singingi, Pelalawan, Rokan Hilir, Rokan Hulu, Siak and the two cities of Pekanbaru and Dumai.

Said, who had visited Johor previously, said that Johor and Pekanbaru were similar in many ways, especially culturally.

He said he hoped to bring something similar to the Johor Premium Outlet to Pekanbaru, to further promote its tourism industry.

He also commented on the many new iconic tourist attractions in Johor Baru like the Legoland Puteri Harbour Family Theme Park, and also the varieties of cuisine coming from Malaysia’s multi-racial population.

Said said that tourists to the province should not miss the Bono Wave River Surf in Kampar River and also the Tongkang Bakar ritual practised by the Indonesian Chinese.

Firefly flies from JB to Pekanbaru four times a week. The 80-minute flight departs from JB at 10.20am and the return flight from Pekanbaru is at 11am.
