Actually the one ringgit u pay is to the immigration guy or lady in the booth...it is not compulsory actually..if u buat dunno or speak Thai, u can avoid having to pay one ringgit..can save quite a lot if u go in frequently.. But I still pay cos I afraid I kena banned from entering next time..

There are 4 main and well-known border crossings between Malaysia and Thailand and each has its own uniqueness.

(1) Padang Besar (Perlis) - one crosses a railway track to be on the other side of the border

(2) Bukit Kayu Hitam (Kedah) - one crosses a road and a ridge (no man's land) into Danuk, the Thai side of the border

(3) Pekalan Hulu (Perak) - one crosses a hill to go into Thailand and onwards to Betong by road

(4) Rantau Panjang (Kelantan) - one crosses a river, which is Sungai Golok (by a bridge) to Golok, the Thai border town.

So, there is a choice: cross railway track? cross ridge/road? cross hill? cross river? your choice.., as long as don't cross fire (between insurgents and Thai military)

There is another crossing (Highway was supposed to be developed fully during Dr M era, but abandoned) that is at Kampong Durian Burung (Kedah). They say one can also cross via Tumpat (Kelantan) that I am not too sure.

Any Malaysian holding IC showing the following Birth Place (BP) codes, are allowed to have a border pass that is limited to travel into Thailand within a radius of 50 km (technically, one can not travel to Hatyai on a border pass)

BP Codes: 02, 25, 26. 27 (Kedah); 08,36,37,38,39 (Perak); 09,40 (Perlis) and 03, 28, 29 (Kelantan)

Penang kia are not known to have traveled to Southern Thailand with a border pass

I hold dual citizenship, Penang n Kedah cos I got residential address in Kedah as well. Normally I dun go to Padang besar cos afraid get run over by train while crossing railway line. For danOk, I also rarely go cos afraid get shot when crossing no man's land. I oso dun go thru rantau panjang cos worry get bombed by insurgents while crossing river. So I left with only one choice..cross hill to go to betong...
