Batavia aircraft makes emergency landing

A Batavia Air Boeing 737-200 aircraft made an unscheduled landing at Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport in Palembang en route to Batam on Thursday, but all 113 people on board were unharmed, Antara reported.

The incident comes just four days after another Boeing 737-200 belonging to Mandala Airlines slammed into a crowded residential area in Medan, and two days after a Garuda Indonesia and another Mandala plane aborted landings in Riau and Jakarta respectively.

The Batavia Air representative in Palembang, Venny Pontoh, said the plane landed in Palembang at 11 a.m. for minor repairs to its air-conditioning system.

"For the sake of passenger comfort, the pilot decided to make a stop in Palembang," Venny said, denying that the unscheduled landing had been precipitated by an emergency.

The flight was a direct Jakarta to Batam service.

Batavia Air sent a replacement plane to fly all but one of the passengers to Batam a couple of hours later.

The one passenger left behind refused to continue the flight, saying he was frightened by the plane crash in Medan, which killed over 140 people on board the doomed aircraft and on the ground.

"The flight attendants announced the unscheduled landing, but did not say why," the passenger, who identified himself as Agus, told reporters.

After repairs were effected, the plane flew back to Jakarta, carrying passengers bound for the capital.

A member of the House of Representatives conveyed the news of the unscheduled landing to Minister of Transportation Hatta Radjasa during a hearing in Jakarta.

Airliners told to double-check passengers for safety reasons

Air passengers who are annoyed at being asked to provide their identity cards in random ticket checks should realize the process is for their own good, airlines and the transportation minister say.

The importance of ticket checking became clear following Monday's Mandala Airlines plane crash in Medan, North Sumatra, which killed 149 people.

The names of three ill-fated Mandala passengers were missing from the passenger list, causing extra trauma to their bereaved families and meaning insurers were not required to pay out any compensation for their deaths.

The three had purchased their tickets from scalpers.

Minister of Transportation Hatta Radjasa said on Thursday the government would issue a decree requiring air crews to conduct double checks on passenger tickets before boarding.

"It may be annoying but it should be a must. This is to avoid any chaos (like in the Mandala crash) from reoccurring," Hatta told the House of Representatives Commission V on transportation and telecommunication.

Hatta, who was asked many tough questions at the hearing, said the checks would be made when passengers were checking in and boarding.

Garuda spokesman Pudjobroto, meanwhile, said identity spot checks were a standard safety procedure the national flag carrier had to comply with. However, he did not believe complete double checks of passengers would be feasible.

"Garuda conducts random checks for efficiency at the check-in counters. We've made public this a policy for a long time, so it will be the passengers' responsibility if they still insist on using tickets without their proper names," Pudjobroto said on Thursday.

If passengers were caught with incorrect tickets, Pudjobroto said, they would be required to buy new ones.

"But if he or she manages to get into the plane, we take no responsibility if something bad happens. We only take care of those whose names are on our list," Pudjobroto said.

The check, he added, was also crucial to ensure the safety of the passengers by stopping terrorists or hijackers from getting on board.

However, double checks of every passenger would be difficult because of the time constraints airlines were under. If instituted they would only cause more delays, he said.

"But the message is clear: That passengers know the procedural consequences if their names don't appear."

Merpati Indonesia corporate secretary Jaka Pujiyono said no insurance companies would pay compensation to holders of scalped tickets.

The logic, he said, was that the insurance was sold to the person whose name was on the ticket. "So if it's not your name, and something happens to you, it's not the insurance firm's responsibility."

Jaka said Merpati often conducted full checks on all passengers at certain times but would not elaborate for security reasons.

"We don't want the passengers to know our schedule (of full checks), so they can cheat us. But the message is that they should always be prepared. That's also why passengers are always told to check in an hour before departure. So if we make checks, it won't cause any disruptions," Jaka said.

At the commission hearing, Hatta also said the ministry would start carrying out special inspections and evaluations of all Boeing 737-200 aircraft on Friday.

"Most local carriers operate this type of aircraft and they have the highest accident rates. The evaluations will just be ramp checks (spot checks at the airport) and we will not ground all of the planes."

City braces for new smoking regulations

Owners of enclosed buildings will soon be required to physically separate smoking places from non-smoking areas and must equip smoking rooms with exhaust fans, ash trays and warnings on the dangers of smoking to health, a gubernatorial regulation states.

Smoking is strongly linked to the development of conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and infertility.

Gubernatorial regulation No. 72, dated June 20, 2005, was issued as an implementing regulation of bylaw No. 2/2005 on air pollution control, which will come into effect in February 2006.

Under the bylaw, owners of enclosed buildings and other public places that fail to comply with the regulation will be fined up to Rp 50 million (US$4,850) or jailed for up to six months.

The regulations are mostly addressed at those responsible for smoke-free zones -- owners of buildings, offices, schools, houses of worship and drivers of public transportation vehicles.

Also included on the list of public places are offices -- both government and private -- bus terminals, train stations, malls, airports, shopping centers, hotels and restaurants.

Public transportation vehicles, meanwhile, include trains, taxis, buses, busway, public minivans and kancil.

According to the head of the City's clean air campaign Yusiono Anwar Supalal, building owners, for example, may declare entire buildings as smoke-free places or they may designate special smoking places within their buildings.

The regulation also requires people responsible for public places to follow up on any complaints on violations of the smoke-free zones in their respective areas.

Heads of work places are required to give warnings to employees who violate no smoking zones.

Meanwhile, drivers of public transportation vehicles are also required to warn smoking passengers, but passengers may report smoking drivers to officials of the City Transportation Agency, who are required to take measures against such drivers.

Bylaw No. 2/2005 on air pollution control was approved by the City Council in early February and will be put into effect in mid February next year.

The bylaw also emphasizes the importance of curbing vehicular emissions, which contribute to over 70 percent of Jakarta's air pollution.

The ruling includes requirements for all public vehicles to convert to using natural gas, as well as compulsory emission tests for all vehicles.

According to Article 40 of Bylaw No. 2/2005, civil servant investigators, in cooperation with City Police, will carry out investigations against those who violate smoke-free zones.

Executives of several building management companies said on Wednesday that they had not received any information about the new regulations, but said that they had no problem in banning smoking in public spaces in their building.

Maintenance manager of PT Sarinah on Jl. M. H. Thamrin in Central Jakarta Suhodo, for example, said that the most important thing was that the administration was consistent in enforcing the regulation.

"For us, there is no problem, but we hope that the enforcement would be carried out fairly in all buildings in the city. If we implement a smoking ban, while others do not, our mall will have no visitors or tenants," he said.

Dear Brothers,

I met up with the guy Resky at Plaza Indonesia Starbuck Coffee House after much hassled. After I have chosen from the photos, he sent me, I contacted him via the phone number from Bro Rainman and arranged to met at the above place.

I left early and was there at 5pm and waited until 7pm before the asshole turned-up. Well I wasn't really wasting my time there,afterall I had nothing to do and I was also really fun watching all the beautiful ceweks passing by.

Resky, a relatively handsome young man in jeans, who also spoke good english and probably in his mid twenties, relatively well built, about 1.68m, arrived. We chatted for awhile and he invited me to the carpark to view the girls.

Two young indonesian girls appeared shyly from a kijang and I noticed at once that they are not the one I had "ordered". I refused to accept any of the girls and rejected them outright. I told him that these were not the ones I wanted and he had wasted my time. He kept insisting that the girls were beautiful and I should take one of them. I continued with my refusal and soon another guy joined in the conversation. I told the new guy that I had been "cheated" of my time and was very unhappy with tonite's arrangement. I told them that they were not professionals and why provided photographs for clients to choose and then can't deliver. Anyway the other guy can't speak english, fortunately my bahasa was so so and we managed a good conversation. He agreed with me that clients should not be denied the girl they have ordered. Turning to Resky, after giving him a good "chewing", they left promising to get back to me with the girl I wanted. They called 20mins later and told me that the girl was busy tonite and will arrange the next time again.

BTW, the 2 girls he brought with him were below par and sort of kampong standard. I won't pay even 500 000 rups for any of them. But I must admit they are young and have nice body. One of them is also a half chinese and this one was so shy that she at first refused to come out from the kijang for my viewing. Only after some persuasion then, she shyly stepped off the car.I would probably have accepted her if the price is one million but for 2 million, I can have much better choices.

After the whole debacle, I called a fellow bro and we ended up spending some time in Classics bunker watching the sexy dancing. One of the dancers, the taller of the 3 is a real syt.
