Dear bro,

"may tinh", "may vi tinh", "vi tinh" are the same meaning regarding to computer. I perfer "may tinh" but sometimes make other misunderstand because the calculator is also "may tinh"

Yup the cabby I refered to is coming on April. I do not know the exact day too. How long do u stay in VN? I think your gal is from An Giang, near to Cambodia, quite far from HCMC. If we want to meet up must be arranged in advance though.

i see. problem is vdict.com only give "may tinh" when i tried to search for computer or laptop. sometimes she may be saying the same thing that i am saying, but as the words we are using are different, it causes her to be a bit frustrated.

da, i think is an giang as she says her house go cambodia is quite near. but the thought of going into cambodia does scare me though. staying there probably for a week or so. but since she's not working, should not have a problem arranging a meet up.

Remember that time is on a mini-bus, 10-12seater. It is about 5-7 hour depend on which part of An Giang you go. In between got break for 1 meal.

I know when "suong" should be used, but maybe she recalled one of her wild night and felt "suong" out of blue. It is also reasonable.

When "suong" is used as a girl's name, how should I pronounce it? Thanks.

Fight against crime achieves significant results
===============================================

VietNamNet Bridge - In the days before and after the Lunar New Year, police stepped up anti-crime efforts to ensure citizens happily enjoy their holiday. VOV interviewed lieutenant-general Pham Quy Ngo, head of the Crime Prevention General Department, the Ministry of Public Security.

How did the police manage to ensure all citizens across the country for a safe and sound Tet.

This is good news that almost no major incidents have occurred so far. However, during the nine days of Tet, there were 715 criminal cases, up 5.3 percent compared to last year. Some crimes, such as robberies, thefts and acts of resisting law enforcement officers, decreased. Police at local levels handled 264 cases and arrested 376 people.

I think this year’s violations increased but we achieved significant results.

We encountered 34 smuggling cases and 31 cases of trafficking and transporting drugs. The Tien Giang police uncovered a gold smuggling ring, seizing 92kg of gold and thousands of boxes of cigarettes.

What happened in the cases of resisting law enforcement officers?

These cases were very audacious, such as attacking a traffic policeman in Lai Chau, stabbing a policeman in Ha Tinh and shotting a militiaman in Can Tho.

Before Tet, 16 drug dealers battled police in Hoa Binh province, killing three and injuring 9 others.

In one case, criminals posed as police and when they were detected they shot a police officer. Sometimes, criminals are very reckless and act unpredictably.

What measures did the police use to fight crime?

We must maintain unwavering spirit and never shrink from sacrifices. With nearly 18,000 drug-users, the fight is very difficult, requiring the police to be decisive and clever to minimize our losses. It is difficult to avoid taking casualties in the fight against criminals.

We need to coordinate with other relevant agencies and provide modern facilities and training courses for the officers whose duty it is to investigate and combat crime.

VietNamNet/VOV

Women’s role recognised as nation marks International Women’s Day
================================================== ======

VietNamNet Bridge – The Viet Nam Women's Union yesterday, March 7, called on women nationwide to bring into full play all heroic traditions to help build a stronger, more prosperous, just, democratic and civilised Viet Nam.

These remarks were made at a meeting to celebrate the 100th International Women's Day.

The meeting also paid homage to the 1,970th anniversary of the Hai Ba Trung (Two Trung Sisters) Uprising and the 45th anniversary of the founding of the women's war-time emulation movement, which was dubbed "ba dam dang" (three responsibilities).

Exactly 1,970 years ago, the Trung Sisters led an uprising against the Han invaders to wrest independence back to the country, after it had experienced more than 200 years of foreign rule. The uprising is remembered in Viet Nam's history as a symbol of the country's national strength and patriotism. The uprising also commemorates the importance of women's role in shaping the country.

The Communist Party of Viet Nam Central Committee's Secretary Ha Thi Khiet, National Assembly Deputy Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong, Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan, and the United Nations Resident Co-ordinator John Hendra attended the meeting together with representatives from various organisations.

Nguyen Thanh Hoa, Chairwoman of the Viet Nam Women's Union urged all women to be more patriotic, united, creative, courageous, and open-minded in order to better contribute to the society and community.

The Party Central Committee's Secretary Khiet was pleased that the Viet Nam Women's Union had been an effective representative of 13 million women nationwide. The union cares for their legitimate rights, and has their members through different periods of the revolutionary movement to protect and contribute to the development of the country.

She was confident that, with the vigorous development of the international women's movement coupled with the heroic traditions and intrepid will that is embedded in every single Vietnamese woman, Viet Nam women's movement would grow stronger and more successful in the coming time.

At the meeting, John Hendra, UN Resident Co-ordinator, hailed Viet Nam as an acknowledged leader in the region in promoting gender equality.

Viet Nam ratified the International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) in 1982, and has established laws and policies that reflect CEDAW. Viet Nam has also passed two landmark laws: the Law on Gender Equality and the Law on Domestic Violence, which have worked to promote women's rights.

"Women represent almost half of the economically active population. Female and male participation rates in primary and secondary schools are congruent, and 25 percent of members of the National Assembly are women - the highest participation rate among the countries in ASEAN," said Hendra.

But the UN Resident Co-ordinator also warned that Viet Nam was still facing challenges like domestic abuse. The country must also work to end the practice of sex-selection among young parents, and it must protect women at work, while extending social protection for women in all sectors.

Hendra said, women should be treated on par with men in decision making, whether it is in the household, in community level forums, or in elected positions.

He said the UN strongly supported Viet Nam while it addresses these issues.

This year the UN will help support the development of a National Strategy for Gender Equality and a National Targeted Programme, together with a National Action Plan for Domestic Violence.

President

Last Saturday, President Nguyen Minh Triet presented the Golden Rose cups to 100 business women, who had considerably contributed to the nation's socio-economic development.

Most cup recipients are CEOs and chairs of management boards for big companies that specialise in banking, finance, services, trade and investment.

Triet congratulated them on their achievements, but noted that it will be a challenging year ahead.

The Golden Rose cups' presentation ceremony, which has been running for five years, is organised by the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the Viet Nam Women's Union.

Haute bourgeoisie buying haughty homes
===============================================

VietNamNet Bridge - HCM City’s richest neighborhoods are becoming mini-Beverly Hills as wealthy entertainers buy up sprawling million-dollar homes.

Flamboyant, scandalous and always controversial singer Dam Vinh Hung recently began bragging about his nearly US$5 million penthouse at the new Sunrise City development in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 7.

In the old days he might have been ridiculed for such a display of ostentatiousness. But that was then and this is now.

The 700-square-meter unit, which has yet to be built, will contain a garden, and all the exterior walls will be bay windows, which Hung said would bring him the ’whole sky in just one reach."

Hung is just one in a growing trend of in-fashion celebrities doling out their riches to buy gargantuan homes in the Ho Chi Minh City suburbs.

The sky’s not the limit

Hung said his new apartment would fit his personality: dynamic, adventurous but "sensitive."

"At the moment, it is hard to find a satisfactory house in the city center. But from my penthouse, I can take in the fantastic panoramic view with my friends and family," said Hung. "And with such a large amount of space, I can have my fill decorating and giving the home a special design."

So what does Mr. Dam, as he’s known, have in mind?

The apartment will apparently be decked out in dozens of white square cubes. He said white is his favorite color.

Mr Dam also said he would make his new home a venue for private concerts and parties, just like Hollywood celebrities do in their homes.

"I want to be the trailblazer of the new trend in Vietnam: living in a really hi-end flat and organizing smart and cozy concerts right in my own home, the way international artists have done," said Hung. "I think in the near future, some Vietnamese artists, who are also my friends, will become my new neighbors."

The neighborhood gang

Before Hung, singer Cam Ly purchased a 400-square-meterapartment for over $1 million also at Sunrise City. Both Ly and Hung said that the location would be their new homes’ biggest virtue.

"I used to spend a lot of time traveling and hunting for brand name clothes, which are rare in Vietnam, for my performances," said Ly. "But this fast-growing and great urban center [District 7] will be home to many splendid malls."

Huu Minh, noted local music impresario and Ly’s husband, said the couple searched far and wide before settling on the abode.

"It will be convenient for our children to go to good schools there," he said.

The lap of luxury

Overseas model-turned-magician Ngo My Uyen had all the furniture and walls of her house on HCMC’s Han Thuyen Street laminated in gold. The house is now valued at around $10 million, but Uyen didn’t pay a dime for it initially as she inherited it from her family.

Miss Vietnam 1992 Ha Kieu Anh’s house, which is situated in HCMC’s District 2, is valued at over $2 million. Rumors said that the house is one of the Anh family’s great fortune earned in the real estate business.

Soon, when people think of Vietnam, they will no longer think rice paddies and water buffalos, but "swimming pools and movie stars."
