Thanks for the summary. Wow, Dangerous fun for a change, hehe
Passed by Danok on way to Hatyai during the day once and it looks sleepy. But on way back passed thru during the night and both sides of the main road was rocking. One cheongster on the van told me Danok is now more happening than Hatyai so have to taste it one of these days.

Same here -also didn't go up to border for some time until recently
Both Padang Besar and Danok are at the border but diff places. PD is on Perlis side and split into two-half in Thailand and half is Malaysia.
Danok is on Thai side of immigration checkpoint- The Malaysian immigration side is Bukit Kayu Hitam which is in Kedah.
Still remember few yrs ago, when took bus up north and reach Bukit Kayu Hitam early morning ard 5am or something. Bus stopped at Bukit Kayu Hitam checkpoint but the checkpoint still not open cos it is not 24 hrs open. So we all had to hang around and lie on ground TCSS waiting and waiting. The whole scene was quite bizarre like a scene from Chuck Norris Missing in Action movie with immigration officers /guards moving around the jungle makeshift checkpoint while we were like bunch of Vietnamese refugees lying on compound

I thought the border town was Changlun during the 1970's and 1980's?? There was no Bukit Kayu Hitam those days and no Danok too, only Sadao.

Those days one could see our polis hutan patrolling the border fences at along the no man's land (where the Thai immigration check point is now)
The Thai town of Betong is next to the Perak border town, at that time known as Kroh, which was severely under night curfew.
They sold "fried chicken drumsticks" along the border.
