Barcelona 4 - 2 Valencia : Lionel Messi scores twice to help Barcelona defeat 10 men Valencia

Lionel Messi scored twice to help Barcelona keep pace in La Liga's title race with a 4-2 defeat of 10-man Valencia at the Camp Nou on Sunday night.

Valencia had a lead against the run of play after Munir El Haddadi chased a long ball that went out for a corner. Mangala headed home Dani Parejo's cross into the box to put the visitors ahead.

But the lead would only last six minutes, as Suarez ran onto a quick throw-in from Neymar and scored with a sliding first touch.

Valencia's hopes seemed to be extinguished in the 44th minute, when Messi played through Suarez, who had his shirt grabbed by Mangala. It was a clear red card -- even if the Uruguayan went down rather easily -- and Messi put his penalty down the middle to put Barcelona ahead.

However, there was more drama in an eventful first half as the 10 men caught Barcelona sleeping before the break. Soler passed ahead to Jose Gaya, who fed across for Munir to tap in, though the player declined to celebrate his equaliser against his parent club.

On 52 minutes, Diego Alves made a fine save to deny Neymar, who had been played in by Messi. And less than a minute later the Argentina superstar received an Iniesta pass and found space at the near post to beat the Valencia goalkeeper and restore Barcelona's lead.

The hosts were rewarded again for their efforts two minutes from time when Neymar crossed for substitute Andre Gomes to tap in.

Granada 1 - 4 Barcelona : Barcelona maintain pressure on Real

Barcelona kept up the pressure on La Liga leaders Real Madrid as they won 4-1 at struggling Granada.

Luis Suarez put Barca -- without Lionel Messi for this game due to a one-match suspension -- in front in the 44th minute with a sublime lobbed finish.

Granada sprung a surprise by levelling five minutes into the second half through Jeremie Boga, before fellow substitute Paco Alcacer restored the visitors' lead in the 64th minute.

The hosts were reduced to 10 men in the 82nd when Uche Agbo was sent off, and a minute later Ivan Rakitic's shot went in off Mathieu Saunier, with Neymar then adding a fourth for Luis Enrique's men in stoppage time.

Barcelona failed to close the gap on La Liga leaders Real Madrid as they were beaten 2-0 at Malaga, where Brazil forward Neymar was sent off.

Antoine Griezmann had netted a late equaliser as Atletico Madrid secured a 1-1 draw away at their city rivals earlier in the day, which could have allowed Barcelona to leapfrog them at the top of the table.

However, Malaga boss Jose Miguel Gonzalez had not read the script as his side chalked up a second successive victory to move closer to safety.

Sandro netted on the break against his former club after half an hour and substitute Rodriguez Jony added a late second after Neymar had seen red having picked up a needless second caution.

As a result, Real Madrid edge three points clear of Barcelona with a match in hand, while Malaga now sit 14th.

However, Gomes and Messi both got their second goals of the evening either side of the hour mark to put the game to bed and Paco Alcacer and Javier Mascherano, the latter from the penalty spot, quickly added gloss to the scoreline with just 67 minutes on the clock.

Alcacer became the third player to net a double with four minutes remaining.
