Jakarta’s traffic, pollution drives foreign tourists away

There is not much left for foreign tourists in Jakarta. Severe traffic, pollution and little in the way of cultural offerings have dissuaded tourists from coming to the city.

It turns out Jakarta, as Indonesia’s main gateway, is considered no more than a transit point. Foreign tourists stay one or two days before heading to what they consider more interesting destinations like Bali, Yogyakarta or Lake Toba in North Sumatra.

“I arrived here last night and will leave tomorrow morning for Lake Toba,” Marry Simone, an American backpacker, told The Jakarta Post on Monday.

She was staying in a hostel on Jl. Jaksa, the most popular backpacker haunt in the city. The street is noted in the Lonely Planet series of backpackers’ travel guides for its cheap room rates and accessibility.

But then Jakarta’s traffic put Marry off.

“Once we’re out of Jl. Jaksa and get to Jl. Thamrin the situation is frustrating. Traffic seems to last all day long and we often lose our desire to explore the city,” she said.

This was Marry’s second visit to Indonesia. During her first visit in 2007 she experienced the same traffic woes in Jakarta.

“Based on my previous story I prefer Bali’s airport to Jakarta’s. Now I’m planning to visit some cities in Sumatra. Since Bali is too far away, Jakarta was my only option,” she said.

Jl. Jaksa may have an annual celebration termed the “Jl. Jaksa and Betawi Culinary Festival”, but the city obviously needs more than one three-day parade in July to retain tourists.

“I must say Jakarta is not that comfortable. The pollution is bad and we don’t have many things to do here. We don’t hear about many places to explore or cultural festivals,” German tourist Tom Reigner said.

Tom, who was staying on Jl. Jaksa with his wife Audrey, said the city was boring and dirty.

“It’s the biggest and the busiest city in Indonesia. But smaller and quieter cities like Yogyakarta offer more cultural attractions for us,” he said.

Audrey said foreigners like her and her husband were more interested in culture. “We look forward to seeing traditional dances and performances in Yogyakarta and Solo,” she said.

There are currently fewer and fewer people like the Reigners on
Jl. Jaksa.

Rio Udayanto of the Hotel Asri said the number of foreign guests had declined in the past year, replaced by more local business travelers.

“In the past couple of days we have had three guests, all of them were locals,” he said.

On weekends local tourists comprise 80 percent of the hotel’s guests, Rio said. “A few years ago most of our guests were European tourists, particularly French and Germans,” he said.

Overall, business is slumping in the area. Some locals who opened hostels for foreign backpackers have closed down recently. Some tourist-related businesses were also closing.

Ning recently decided to close his used bookstore on Jl. Jaksa. “The business ran well. I even planned to open new branches in Bali and Yogyakarta. But I had to call off my plans because I don’t have that many buyers anymore,” she said.

She has now set up a roadside stall to sell books instead. She rents the spot for Rp 1 million (US$113) for three months.

“I still have many books at home. But I can’t bring all of them here. The place is not big enough,” she said. (lfr)


The good thing about is it is no so well known that the sex and night industry is so plentiful, with right amount of knowledge, I enjoyed myself as well or better than Bangkok and Chang Ping.....hahahahahaha.......

On Monday night, after all the meetings that I have to attend, my customer brought me to Sands spa beside Novotel Hotel Mangga Dua which I usually stay. I was expecting the massage was only so so but I was seriously wrong. The massage was very good and the masue I will rate her about 6/10 on the face and body was great. The massage was very good. Good strength. Of cos this place allows hanky panky but subjected to your own negotiation with the cewek. For the facilities like the hot pool is nothing to shout about it you compare to Maliboro, it's a bit run down but most of the time men goes there will skip the pool and goes straight for the massage instead which is the objective. There are 3 types of room you can choose from:


1. Standard room that has only a curtain to close the room (No bonking allow and HJ) Rp200k.
2. Room with attached toilet and with lock (must add Rp100k bonking can be done in the room but subject to the cewek price negotiation).
3. VIP room (didn't try so don't know what is the price.)

For HJ the price as quoted by my cewek was Rp200k. FJ, in the room as quoted by my customer's cewek was Rp500k but we as one of the worker there she said usually is Rp350k so guess it's really on the individual cewek.
I was there for consecutive 2 days. Yesterday while waiting at the waiting area saw a very pretty PFC massue but didn't try. Anyway the price for the massage is below.

1. Normal massage with local cewek Rp200k with standard room add Rp100k if you want to have attach toilet in the room plus lock.
2. Normal massage with prc is Rp350k and rate of the room applies.
HJ is Rp200k
FJ is Rp500k (quoted by cewek)
Bring back to your hotel (Rp2 million 12am to 7am) crazy price

Consecutively 2 days I have try this girl with tag number 156 (Her name is Rosa). Her massage is good with good strength and nice body. My customer tried number 88 and 89 on Mon and Tue respectively. Both he say the massage is good as well. However one man's meat is another man's poison.

Marlio is great, Alexis is great too. Good for imports, but if looking for locals, I suggest trying others, like Classic Terminal.

Thanks for the report. However, the tip for HJ should only be 50-100K. Of course if you ask during the massage then she will give an inflated quote. So don't ask how much, just tell her you want a HJ if she hasn't already initiated. Then after the session just give her the appropriate tip. For 400K all in for a massage and happy ending, you might as well go across the street to a top end place like Delta.

Sharing information for Jakarta visitors: i went to Fortune Spa on Sudirman recently and had a nice GFE. No. 88, young and tight. When talking to her, she says she is selective and doesn't usually do this. So depends on your luck and skills I guess.

I went there the next day and she was fully booked. So it seems she is well liked.
