The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Mon, 06/20/2011 9:55 AM A | A | A | The current installment of the Great Jakarta Sale, an event held jointly by Jakarta administrators and the Jakarta branch of the Indonesian Shopping Center Association (APPBI) has been billed as a environmentally friendly festival. The festival’s motto is “Go Green, Go Healthy and Go International”. The festival is trying to live up to its hype by introducing eco-friendly programs, from a bike ride, a parade of horse-drawn carriages and the mass planting of trembesi (Albizia Saman) trees. One of participants in the festival, Thamrin City Shopping Center in Central Jakarta, has gone the extra mile to convey the green message by putting up posters, green-colored banners and green traditional ondel-ondel effigies that decorate its wall. Mall spokesperson Chiesnawati said that the tree planting program and the fun bike activities were among indications that the festival is aimed at going green and healthy. “It is green because we have a tree planting program and it is healthy because we have a fun biking activity,” she said. But do customers really buy into the marketing campaign? “The motto is only a slogan. That’s only an advertisement,” one Thamrin City Shopping Center shopper Isar, 52, said. For customers such as Isar, however, he was more concerned about the price tag of merchandise on offer rather than the Great Sale’s green campaign. “I don’t know if I can bargain because for this kind of event. The discounted price is set after it was first jacked up,” he said. Even some of the attendants in the mall have grown curious about the green campaign. “There is no difference in the use of plastic bags,” said event attendant Muti. Muti, 22, said that she was not even aware about the green campaign. Adelia, 23, a fellow shop attendant also shared a similar view. “I don’t see any action that could lead to saving energy,” she said. Urban architect Ridwan Kamil said that the current Jakarta Great Sale installment may have misinterpreted the green campaign. “Planting trees or riding bikes can be a good thing, but it doesn’t have essential relations to the actual green concept,” he said. Ridwan said the green concept adopted by the shopping festival should be more comprehensive to include energy efficient programs, waste recycling processes, access to open space and the use of local materials. Indonesia Solid Waste Association chairwoman Sri Bebasari said that one of simple solutions that the festival could try is avoiding the excessive use of plastic bags, which has become a serious problem in the city. She said that 1,000 of 6,000 tons of garbage produced in the city comes from plastic bags, which takes more than 1,000 years to decompose. Bebasari also added that shopping malls in the city could also help the green campaign by using plastic bags made with a chemical substance called oxium, which made it possible for plastic bags to decompose in only two years. “Some retailers have used them,” she said.
