Teachers ‘play gamelan’ on confiscated cell phones, hammering them in front of shocked students
Like educators around the world, school officials in Indonesia struggle to prevent students from being distracted by their cell phones. Recently, an Indonesian school went viral for hammering into students the importance of not violating the rules about mobile phone use in both a figurative and smashingly literal sense. Video of the incident, which went viral over the weekend, shows two teachers standing over a table covered in dozens of cell phones, with a crowd of students watching with concern from a distance. The cries of the crowd go up when the first teacher starts hammering away at the phones, and rise higher when the second teacher attacks the mobile devices with such vigor some fall from the table. It turns out the video was shot at the ‘Wali Songo’ Ngabar Pesantren (Islamic Boarding School) in Ponorogo, East Java. A statement explaining the video was posted to the school’s social media account. “The cell phones that were seen in the video were confiscated items that are prohibited, brought by students who tried to secretly bring cell phones into the dorms in violation of the rules, which can cause a disruption in the educational processes at the pesantren,” reads part of the statement. The statement goes on to say that the hammering of the mobile phones was in accordance with the school’s rules and regulations and was intended to create a deterrent effect. It also mentioned that the viral video had not been made or sanctioned by the school. We’re pretty sure the school also didn’t authorize this amusing gamelan “remix” of the video, putting the sounds of the traditional percussive instrument atop the sound of the hammering of cell phones. But it’s pretty perfect nonetheless. |

Re: Indonesia TCSS, Exchange Rate, Favourite Song/Music update
Little boy, afraid of getting circumcised, stays up on roof for three hours before being talked down
Most Indonesian boys, especially Muslims, get circumcised around the age of five. Many remember the procedure with a certain fondness since circumcisions are traditionally treated as a rite of passage into manhood that is rewarded with parties and presents. But there’s no doubt that the idea of having someone take a knife to your most sensitive region is a terrifying thought for most boys (and men) so we completely understand what was going through this kid’s mind. The above photo was shared on Facebook by Anik Sutari, a doctor living in the city of Serang in Banten, along with the story of how the little boy ended up sitting on a roof and how he eventually got down. Dr. Anik starts the caption off by writing: “Throughout my professional history, out of the 20 years I have been doing circumcisions and the thousands of children I have circumcised, this is the first time I’ve seen a child flee to the top of the roof.” The doctor says everybody tried to talk the boy down, but nobody dared to come up to the roof out of fear the child might run away and endanger his safety. After two hours of waiting there were still no signs that the child wanted to go down, but suddenly his parents thought to call the boy’s teacher. Soon after, Dr. Anik wrote, the boy’s teacher arrived on the scene and, with a little persuasion, was finally able to talk to boy down. “And even more miraculous …… the child walked alone to the place where the circumcision was going to take place and positioned himself for the procedure, without being led or forced by anyone …” The doctor said the boy didn’t struggle, cry or complain of pain at all during the circumcision. Dr. Anik then muses that the actual circumcision only took 10 minutes, but she had to wait three hours to perform it. But she ends by saying that three hours is not a long time compared to the valuable lesson she got from a great person, the boy’s teacher (unfortunately, the doctor doesn’t describe what exactly the teacher said to the boy, but it must’ve been one hell of a speech). The circumcision story has gone viral since Dr. Anik posted it on Monday, amassing over 2,000 likes and over 900 shares. |

Jakarta sanitation workers find ‘thousands’ of used condoms clogging up drains around Mega Kuningan
So, flushing used condoms down the toilet is apparently a big problem in Jakarta. Sanitation workers in the capital found thousands of the prophylactic rubbers — along with other kinds of unsanitary sanitary products — clogging up drains in one busy Jakarta business district. City-owned sewerage company PD Pal Jaya today said that they found thousands of used condoms during a recent clean up of drains around Mega Kuningan, South Jakarta. “There was so much trash, including the condoms,” PD Pal Jaya First Director Subekti told Viva. Other types of waste that cleaners found were used sanitary pads, plastic bottles, as well as discarded underwear. Subekti then pretty much said what we’re all thinking. “It’s probably because there are many hotels in the area,” he speculated. Subekti said that, since the clean up process of the area began on July 2, sanitation workers have in total collected 10 sacks weighing around 10 kilograms each containing the aforementioned waste. He urged residents and guests at hotels in Mega Kuningan not to flush anything down the toilet that could clog up drains. And, in case you weren’t aware, even excessive amounts of toilet paper can clog pipes, let alone condoms and underwear. Also, those sanitation workers deserve a raise. |

Video of Czech couple ‘dishonoring’ holy temple in Bali sparks outrage among Indonesian netizens
A video showing a couple from the Czech Republic washing the woman’s private parts with holy water from a Balinese Hindu temple in Ubud went viral over the weekend, sparking outrage among many Indonesians and furthering the conversation on issues with tourism in Bali. The video, which was first uploaded as a story to the Instagram account of the woman, Sabina Dolezalova, has since been captured and shared widely by others. The video also shows her boyfriend, Zdenek Slouka, splashing water from a pelinggih (shrine) on Dolezalova’s butt. Unsurprisingly, the video elicited a lot of negative reactions from Indonesians, including Balinese designer Niluh Djelantik, who highlighted the importance of tourists understanding and respecting Balinese culture. “Bali will drown if we can’t protect ourselves and be selective with the types of tourists that visit the island,” Niluh said in an Instagram post. The couple uploaded an apology video not long after receiving a torrent of criticisms online in which they expressed their regret and admitted their lack of knowledge about the temple and its holy status. “We are so sorry about the video from yesterday, we dishonored the holy temple and holy water in Ubud, and we didn’t know it,” Slouka said in the video. According to a statement issued by the Gianyar Police, Slouka and Dolezalova held a meeting with officials from Padangtegal village (where the temple is located) on Sunday. The meeting produced a joint statement from the couple and officials in which they declared that the matter was taken care of. In a message exchange with Niluh (which the designer shared on her account), the couple again apologized and claimed that it was hard for them to recognize which places are holy because they are atheists. However, the apology was seen as inadequate by many Indonesians, many of whom commented on how their apologies appeared insincere and blasted the couple for using their atheism as an excuse. “Atheist does not mean you can disrespect others’ beliefs. And Bali is known as Pulau Dewata [Island of the Gods], so Bali is holy. “Not knowing” is not a valid excuse to disrespect a religion. This is frustrating,” Instagram user @_cunique commented. Another comment came from Jerinx, the drummer of Bali’s famed punk rock band Superman Is Dead who has become well known as an activist in his own right. Jerinx took to social media to argue that similar incidents involving foreign tourists happen far too often on the island. “How convenient, a mere apology on Instagram and everything’s fixed. See what happens if we do something similar in their country, the result will be different. Bali has been disrespected too often by tourists,” Jerinx tweeted. In April of last year, for example, a Spanish vlogger went viral after a video of him climbing up a Balinese temple sparked outrage among Balinese netizens. It was followed by an apology video as well, in which “Bernat” claimed that he didn’t realize he was not allowed to climb up on the temple. According to Hening Widyastuti, a psychologist from Universitas Sebelas Maret in Solo, Central Java, Bali is often on the receiving end of such disrespectful behavior because “we are too soft.” “It’s clear that we are too soft … Cultures and traditions in Bali clash with many policies on tourism, especially when it’s related to financial stuff,” Hening told Kompas.com yesterday. Hening added that many tourists act disrespectfully during their visits because they are spoiled by many services and facilities, which leads to more disrespectful behavior. |
