Pornography (from Greek πορνογραφια pornographia — literally writing about or drawings of harlots) (also informally referred to as "porn", "porno", "pron" or "pr0n") is the representation of the human body or human sexual behaviour with the goal of sexual arousal, similar to, but (according to some) distinct from, erotica.

Pornography may use any of a variety of media — written and spoken text, photos, sculpture, drawings, moving images (including animation), and sounds such as heavy breathing. Pornographic films combine moving images, spoken erotic text and/or other erotic sounds, while magazines often combine photos and written text. Novels and short stories provide written text, sometimes with illustrations. In addition to media, a live performance may also be called pornographic.

In its original meaning, pornography was literally "writing about prostitutes", from the classical Greek roots πορνη and γραφειν. It derived from a Greek term for men who chronicled the well-known "pornai", or skilled prostitutes of ancient Greece. In more modern times, the term was adopted by social scientists to describe the work of men like Nicholas Restif and William Acton, who in the 18th and 19th centuries published treatises studying prostitution and proposing to regulate it. The term retained this meaning in the Oxford English Dictionary until 1905.

The term then came to mean writing about anything sexual, especially in a base manner, when the creation, presentation, or consumption of the material was for sexual stimulation. The term now refers to sexually related material of all kinds, both written and graphical. The term "pornography" often has negative connotations of low artistic merit, as compared to the more esteemed erotica.

Erotica, from the Greek eros, “love”, are works of art, including literature, photography, film, sculpture and painting, that deal substantively with erotically stimulating or arousing descriptions. Erotica is rather a modern word used to describe the portrayal of human sensuality and sexuality with high-art aspirations, differentiating such work from commercial pornography.

While pornography popularly focuses on unadorned and unemotional lusts and the explicit depiction of sexual acts, erotica tends to define material with a higher emotional content, the development of place, character and story line, or of an overall artistic theme. However, such distinctions are necessarily subjective and may say more about the critic's own tastes on erotic material than the artistic and other attributes of the material itself. In the motion picture sense, soft porn is a similar kind of commercial art form that resides in the area between erotica and hardcore pornography, although erotica, as a type of fine art, may also be highly sexually explicit.

Truly amateur pornography is often created for noncommercial purposes. It often includes pornographic home movies and photographs shot by a couple for their private entertainment as well a amateur movies created for noncommercial distribution among friends. Some celebrities have seen their pornographic home movies stolen and illegally distributed commercially such as those featuring Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee. Amateur porn also includes erotic documentaries produced for private entertainment with the additional goal of profit through commercial distribution (usually via the World Wide Web). Another type of amateur porn is professionally produced amateur pornography often referred to as pro-am porn within the industry. Pro-am porn involves professionals behind the camera but amateurs actors, often either first time performers or relative newcomers to pornography. On some occasions a professional actor or actress may appear with the amateur actors. One popular form of pro-am porn is are porn series that purport to introduce new actors/actresses appearing for the first time in porn. They often feature a format in which a host introduces a model, interviews her/him about their past sex life, sexual interests, why she/he decided to appear in porn, etc. and they have the actress perform various sex acts including masturbation, oral sex, intercourse, and sometimes lesbian or gay sex acts. Some so-called amateur porn is not really amateur in any real sense of the term but actually a professionally produced simulation of amateur porn, using such techniques as poor lighting, varying body types and, in the case film or video, omitting a narrative. Note that some pornographers label pornography not containing any traditional hallmarks of amateur pornography, even the simulated variety, as "amateur" and thus the designation may not always be useful in determining the actual type of content in such pornography.

Anal sex or anal intercourse is a commonly practiced form of human sexual behavior. Breast fetishism is a fetishistic sexual interest in female breasts, especially their shape, display and size. The roots of this phenomena go back to ancient history are biologically and culturally driven, and reflect differences in each society.

Currently common in American and Japanese culture, this fixation has increased cultural acceptance of female breast implants among some subcultures. Many adult film and pornography stars have capitalized on this cultural phenomenon by having their breasts enlarged to implausible sizes.

Although it is a cultural phenomenon in the adult film world, this fact can be seen as a reflection and exaggeration of the real world. Large breasts are seen as symbols of sexuality and attractive to men, and some women, in large portions of the Western world, although historically the "preferred" breast size has changed many times. Sociologists and others have often tried to explain this in terms of natural selection and biology but conflicts exist over what is the true reason for some men's and women's attraction to large breasts.

Some prefer small rather than large breasts (estimates of men's preferences range as high as 1/3); and not all breast fetishism concerns size. Some individuals have a fetishistic preference for breasts with large, dark, or puffy areolae (commonly, though incorrectly, referred to as "puffy nipples"), or to unusually long or thick nipples. These variations are all sufficiently common, for example, to rate individual binaries groups on Usenet. This is often due to the unexpected end of stimulation at the critical moment, rather than the desire to have the other party swallow the semen.
