Thumbs up PAP Protects Sinkies! It's Official!

An honorable member of the Coffee Shop Has Just Posted the Following:

SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has curbed the work pass privileges of maritime operator Prime Gold International (Prime Gold) for two years for the discriminatory treatment of Singaporean employees, the ministry announced in a press release on Monday (Dec 29). This is the first time that MOM has taken action against a company which has discriminated against Singaporean employees.

According to MOM, a group of Prime Gold's former Singaporean employees approached the ministry for assistance in June this year, when they were successively retrenched while their positions were filled with new foreign workers.

Prime Gold claimed the Singaporean employees were retrenched due to job redundancies, and because the company was running losses. Prime Gold also cited unsatisfactory work performance and the Singaporean employees' lack of relevant qualifications as reasons for their dismissal, the Manpower Ministry said.

Investigations revealed that Prime Gold retrenched 13 Singaporean workers in phases, and their vacancies were made open to foreign workers thereafter. Prime Gold's reasons for retrenching their ex-employees due to poor work performances and inadequate qualifications were not substantiated, according to MOM.

MOM assessed that Prime Gold had unfairly replaced their Singaporean employees with foreigners, therefore denying Singaporeans fair opportunities for employment and career development.

The ministry says it has taken action against about 100 companies for posting discriminatory job advertisements previously. Under the Fair Consideration Framework (FCF), all firms must consider Singaporeans fairly for job vacancies. Companies should put in place fair hiring, employment, and staff development practices that are open, merit-based, and non-discriminatory, MOM said.
