Thumbs up Survey: Singaporeans trust the court system

An honorable member of the Coffee Shop Has Just Posted the Following:

A recent survey conducted by the State Courts showed that 96% of Singaporeans feel that the courts are fair and justice is served effectively through the legal system here.

When it came to issues about the integrity and independence of the court system, it found that 99% of respondents had positive perceptions of the courts.

The Survey was conducted between December and January and it surveyed over 1000 Singaporeans and Permanent Residents here.

It seems that despite the occasional instances of negativity that the public has about the court system, overall it is still seen as fair.

Some notable examples include the light sentence that Plastic Surgeon Woffles Wu received for getting an elderly colleague to take the rap for his traffic offences, when similar cases in the past with less prominent individuals saw much harsher penalties. Some people felt that the court was showing undue favour to Woffles due to his status.

There have also been several cases of contempt of court threatened against bloggers who have suggested that the courts are unjust with an equal amount of criticism over the action of the authorities to press contempt of court charges instead of simply clearing the air about the doubts.

It would appear from the recent survey results that these are a distinct minority of cases.

In a statement about the survey results, the State Courts explained that one of the areas identified by the survey which could use improvement was the use of technology.

Some respondents felt that technology could be better utilized to speed up the court process and improve the efficiency.

The State Courts said that they are constantly working to improve their services and pointed out some of their new initiatives such as the launch of a number of e-services.

Now, there is an Integrated Electronic Litigation System (eLitigation) which can be used in some civil and family cases as well as the Integrated Criminal Case Filing and Management System (ICMS) which can keep track of criminal cases.

These e-services can simplify the process of organising important documents for cases and the State courts said that they are still looking into more ways in which it can utilize technology.
