90-year-old killed in bus accident at Jurong East
NOVEMBER 18, 2014

A 90-year-old man was killed in an accident involving an SMRT bus yesterday at Jurong East Avenue 1 towards Toh Guan Road, near the Parc Oasis condominium.

The bus driver, a 34-year-old Malaysian woman, has been arrested and the police are investigating the accident.

Eyewitnesses told TODAY the bus had hit the elderly man just before noon as he was crossing the road. The impact of the collision cracked the windscreen of the bus.

SMRT expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased and said it was cooperating with the police in the incident. “We have contacted Mr Tan’s family and will render assistance as best as we can during this very difficult time,” said Mr Patrick Nathan, head of its Corporate Information and Communications Division.

The operator also said its data showed the bus had just pulled out of a bus bay and was moving at around 34kmh at the time of the accident.

Eyewitness Fauzie Husni, 21, said the bus was carrying about 20 to 30 passengers and not travelling quickly when the man was hit. Residents at the site said jaywalking, often by elderly residents, is common along the road and there had been several near misses in the past. Xue Jianyue
