Re: Had blood test and it takes 2 weeks...

Then go for rapid test lor...The test like the pregnancy test but instead of urine, they use drop of blood on the tester..It give almost instant result...The normal one they do Elisa test will take 2 to 3 days lah...Western bloc test for confirmative test will take 2 weeks lor...

Bro, symptoms are the worst gauge for determining HIV status.
Most of the time HIV+ individuals do not exhibit any symptoms until the final stage known as AIDs. By that time, every means of countering optimistic infections would have been exhausted, and you would be too sick to not recognise the symptoms. In short, do not worry too much. Your symptoms are more indicative of anxiety than HIV.

Private GPs send blood samples to labs for analysis. The procedure may take as long as 2 weeks. They run the ELISA and Western Blot tests on your blood. Both the ELISA and Western Blot tests are HIV antibodies tests. Antibodies take as long as 4 weeks to reach detectable blood serum level. Thus it is essential to get a final conclusive test at 3 months post exposure for an accurate reading. (This is based on modern testing technology, currently employed in Singapore.)

ELISA will be used to screen for traces of HIV antibodies. As it is very sensitive, you may get a false positive result. (i.e. not HIV+, but detected as HIV+.) If it's negative, tests ends there; you're negative. If positive, the Western Blot test will be conducted on a new sample to determine if the ELISA's reading was accurate. If both tests results in a positive reading; the result slip will reflect "REACTIVE" - you're clinically HIV positive.

If you tested at Raffles Medical. They conduct an additional test at their in-house facility, known as the P24 Antigen Test. This is a still-in-research test which detects HIV specific P24 antigens in your blood serum. P24 will be present in large amounts during initial infection (within the 3 months window period). As the window period increases, P24 levels eventually drops and antibodies level rises. Thus, Antigen tests may be a good indicator for use within the window period. BUT a conclusive antibody (ELISA/Western Blot combo) should still be conducted at the 3 months mark for clinical accuracy.

(P24 Antigen Tests are currently used for screening donated bloods at blood banks for HIV, and for other research purposes.)

AFA uses what is known as a RAPID TEST. Currently in the pipeline is the OraSure HIV 1 Rapid Test (non-invasive), or the currently used standard blood-drop test.

These tests are comparably accurate to the enzyme immunoassay method (Elisa/Western Blot).

If you test other than at the AFA, the tests conducted will mostly be EIAs - thus the 2-3 weeks waiting time.

Yup, the test results are immediately known for the anonymous testing at DSC. The whole process takes about 20 to 30 minutes. If one’s HIV status is made known at the polyclinic, MOH will have a record of the infection.

Golden Rule: Play safe to sleep well

Correct me if I'm wrong, but annonymous testing remains annonymous only as long as you test negative.

As long as you test positive for HIV, and this is confirmed subsequently, it's no longer annonymous. You're obliged to give your details, contact history etc so that treatment can commence and contact tracing can be done.

Anonymous testing is strictly adhered to during the HIV anonymous testing times at DSC (refer to www.afa.org..sg for the timing). When one is found positive, he undergoes counseling by trained counselors there, as they are many issues that a HIV+ person must face, such as medical costs, legal issues, finance matters, home issues, family problems and a whole host of other problems. There are also support groups that one can join.

However, anonymous here means that your particulars are not given at all, only a number is attached to everyone coming in. Contact history is obtained to find out the source of infection and hopefully curb the spread of the disease. Do not let fear or denial cripple you, when it comes to this matter, when so much is at stake…

Rapid test like urine test for pregnancy lor...Fast test result within minutes leh...But not 100% accurate lor....The other is by Elisa test which blood are taken thru a vein whereas the rapid test by finger prick blood...
Once rapid or Elisa get positive...for confirmatory test by Western Bloc test which take 3 weeks to get result....Elisa get result within 3-5days.....Cheers brather!!!!
