The couple arrived at the square at about 7.30pm and were greeted by hundreds of protesters. Asked if he agreed with the protesters’ demands, Dr Mahathir simply smiled and waved to the crowd. Asked why he came to the rally, he said he “just wanted to see”. Many rushed forward to greet him the moment they realised that it was Dr Mahathir, sparking a frenzy of snapshots and video-filming. Many were heard shouting: “Don’t push, don’t push.” At one point, his bodyguards had to keep the surging crowds at bay.
