Chitchat Question for GD

An honorable member of the Coffee Shop Has Just Posted the Following:

Or any others who have the knowledge or memory.

I 've just come from dinner with a few friends and an old event came up, none of which we remember very much.

Do you recall any Police officer surname De Cruz or something like that who was on his way to work when he saw detectives chasing someone, and he then got out of his car to give chase too.
He was subsequently shot in the chest but apparently did not notice and continued to give chase until he collapsed.

I'm sure this was reported in the papers but none of us can seem to recall this one properly.
