Accused of raping a 16-year-old girl after posing as a police officer, Muhammad Firman Jumali Chew defended himself in court over the course of a few days.
All par for the course, but his arguments are pretty eyebrow-raising. According to various reports by The Straits Times, he insisted that it was the other way round altogether — he was the rape victim in the incident.
The 30-year-old former pizza deliveryman was said to have impersonated a cop after seeing the teenage girl behaving intimately with her boyfriend at a staircase landing of a HDB block in Woodlands in October 2013. After telling the boyfriend to leave, Firman allegedly took the victim to another location and raped the girl in exchange for keeping quiet.
Despite the fact that his semen was found on the girl's clothes and panties, he denied the rape as well as two other charges for sexual assault and impersonating a police officer.
In court, his arguments have been downright baffling. A lift technician — 57-year-old Tung Shue Kiong — who confronted the alleged rapist during the incident was even accused by Firman to be the real "pervert". According to the prosecution, Tung was the one who suspected something was up when he saw Firman and the girl. After searching five blocks of flats, Tung eventually found Firman and confronted him at Woodlands bus interchange.

Firman however disagreed with that account. Here's a list of things he claimed to have actually happened:

- Claiming that Tung has a habit of loitering suspiciously around the neighbourhood, he tailed Tung to Block 362 along Woodlands Avenue 5.
- He found Tung crouching at the stairwell on teh 12th floor of the block, touching himself while watching the teenage couple have sex
- Firman told him that there were police officers around, and Tung left the stairwell. He then approached the couple and asked them for their identity cards
- After the boy left, the girl asked him to accompany her home, walking to Block 359
- She led him up the stairwell, kissed him, pulled down his zipper and touched him against his will
- Throughout it all, he looked at the ceiling and held his arms by his side, afraid of touching her. He didn't walk away as he felt weak at the time
- The girl was the one who initiated physical contact after pouring her heart out to him — something that he says is very familiar to him
- In fact, he dropped out of school because of the stress of girls confiding in him

"You want us to believe that a stranger took you to a stairwell, accosted you and masturbated you... You are the victim, not the 16-year-old girl?" asked the deputy public prosecutor. He agreed.

Firman's search history on his mobile phone had also consisted of research into rape and fellatio on Oct 10, the day after the rape. To help him clarify that, he called upon his wife — Marivic Advincula Manlapaz — as his witness:

Apparently, Firman had been researching about the topic as his wife had been raped in May 2013
Manlapaz testified that she was raped by her husband's friend, claiming that the friend had spiked her drink
Firman had told her to make a report, but she did not do so as she was unclear on what really happened
She eventually made a report in September 2014, but withdrew it 12 hours later after learning that she had to go to Police Cantonment Complex — where Firman said he was inhumanely treated by officers

Firman had also claimed that he was tortured by the police after his arrest.

- He claims to have been bashed against a wall, stripped naked and had ice water poured over him at the Police Cantonment Complex
- Officers tore his shirt
- Officers threatened to make his mother lose her job as well as send his wife back to the Philippines

Nothing came out of internal investigations conducted. According to the police, Firman was also noted to have made over 100 police reports between 2006 and last year including complaints about people stealing Wi-Fi as well as about people following him.

Closing arguments to the case are expected by June 15.
