Youths in viral video attacking another boy investigated by police

SINGAPORE — The police has identified the youths attacking another boy in a video that has gone viral.

A police spokesman confirmed on Friday (Nov 11) that the youths involved in the video have been identified and are currently under investigation.

The spokesman said the police takes a "stern view of lawless and violent public behaviour which could threaten the sense of safety and security in the community". He added: "Any person who resorts to violence and riotous behaviour will be dealt with severely, in accordance with the law.”

In a Facebook post entitled “SAY NO TO BULLIES!!”, Mr Bhai Angullia, 37, posted a video of a group of boys raining blows on another boy in what appeared to be a HDB stairwell.

The video, posted on Thursday evening, has been shared more than 30,000 times.


One of the boys in the video was wearing a Saints T-shirt, and St Andrew's Secondary School principal Lucy Toh said the school is aware of the incident that took place on Nov 5, and confirmed that some of the students involved are from the school.

Declining further comment, citing that the school is working with the police on their investigation, she said: "We take all incidents of fighting seriously, and will continue to educate our students on anger management and appropriate behaviour."

Mr Bhai, who first saw the video shared among a limited audience on his Facebook feed, said as a former victim of bullying himself, the video “struck him hard”. That was what promoted him to download and reshare the video within 15 minutes of seeing it. He believed it was taken by one of the boys involved in the incident.

The father of three was so concerned about the victim that he tried to track him down on Facebook, and contacted a lady he believed to be the boy's mother on Friday morning.

He said: “I kept picturing myself as (the victim). I was skinny like him too… These things scar us for a really long time.”

Recounting his own experience with bullying more than 20 years ago when 10 to 15 boys “took shots” at him, he told TODAY: “I took Taekwondo when I was younger, so I guess, I took the blows well... Nothing broken, just lacerations. But the humiliation was the worst part.”

No one was reprimanded in his case, as he didn’t dare tell anyone.

“I kept wondering as to why my so-called friends found it easy to do this to me. All I wanted was to grow up and get out of whatever I was in,” he added.

Years after the incident, Mr Bhai, currently the owner of a flooring business, became a police officer for six years and saw some of the former bullies in prison or lock-up. “Most of them never turned their life around,” he said.
